EVAN SHAY
Evan Shay is a saxophonist, producer, composer, photographer, and videographer based in Montreal, QC. Originally from Seattle, WA, Shay relocated to Montreal in 2010 where he completed his undergraduate and master's degrees in jazz performance at McGill University. His first solo release was in 2014, an EP entitled Homeward. In 2017, Evan was named one of the “35 Best Canadian Jazz Artists Under 35” by CBC Music. His band Lawful Citizen released a self-titled EP in 2017 and a full-length release Internal Combustion in 2018.
In 2019, Shay attended the Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music, where his identity as a producer truly began to take shape, learning from people such as HPRIZM, Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey, and Steve Lehman. On October 30th, 2020, he released his first full-length solo release NEW NORMAL. NEW NORMAL featured a wide variety of musicians, MC’s, and singers in Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, and Sao Paulo. The record was all composed, recorded remotely, assembled, and released during the pandemic. He has worked with such artists as Backroad Gee, Potatohead People, Nomadic Massive, and others.
