Spring Drive is the true trademark for GS movements, it's a real innovation and a breakthroughh in bringing the best of Quartz and mechanical movements together. I think it is also attached to the brand forever in terms of perception, in the sense that no other brand will produce a movement that's comparable. I visited the GS boutique here in Paris a few days ago, and servicing a Spring drive watch is in fact cheaper than for an Omega Speedmaster. They send them to the Netherlands. Spring Drive all day!

At its heart though, its just a quartz movement. Yes a quartz movement that's been meticulously re-worked to be as mechanical as possible and its more complex than most mechanical movements, but having that quartz regulator driving the oscillating wheel removes the "magic" and wonder of a mechanical movement. The beauty of a mechanical movement is that something as archaic as a collection of gears, springs and other assorted bits of metal and stones can come together to tell the time. To me, that's the "soul" of a mechanical watch that makes it appealing despite the technical redundancy compared to quartz. If you add a motor and quartz regulator, the archaic "magic" is replaced by modern science.
@prstito Жыл бұрын
small note about the description of the Spring Drive. When you began discussing the Tri-synchro regulator, you did so when the graphic was showing the magic lever winding system. The regulator component is actually the illuminated circuit at the end of the graphic. I'm sure it is a simple oversight, but given the precision and intentionality of grand seiko timepieces, that clarification is needed as to not confuse anyone on the brilliance of the movement.

Spring drive is the only movement with true sweeping unlike other watches which use high frequency to simulate the sweep. This means that you can take a video at any fps and it still sweep.
@PETERJOHN101 Жыл бұрын
Not correct, as no movement can eliminate the pulsation of kinetic energy entirely. The fact you cannot discern this effect visually doesn't mean it's not happening.

@@PETERJOHN101I'm not sure what you mean, in the Spring Drive, there is no pulsating. There is only regulated rotation.
@klching474111 ай бұрын
Yes, since it does not oscillate,there is no ticking noise as well.
@c2pascual11 ай бұрын
nah. spring drive still uses a quartz crystal to regulate the sweeping of the hand. 32768 Hz. i dont know how many beats per second that is, but find a fast enough camera and you can capture the pulsation.
@derkatzenfuerst607711 ай бұрын
@@c2pascual sounds like you don't understand the mechanism. The frequency of the crystal is used to measure the speed of the glide wheel, which is rotating. The glide wheel is constantly regulated by a magnetic field. So the frequency of the crystal is only used as a reference to adjust the strength of the magnetic field, it does not directly move or stop the seconds hand. In conclusion, if you would look at the watch with a high speed camera, there would be no micro-ticking. It's actually gliding.

Spring Drive any day! For me, I went from Seiko to Rolex, then now back to Seiko 😂🤣🤣🤣 True circle of life! I ditched my first Seiko Quartz because it failed on me on the most important public exam day in my high school. I swear from then onwards, only the most reliable watch will do. This brings me to the Rolex Sea Dweller. If we think that the Rolex Submariner is tough with its 300m/1000ft water resistance, the Sea Dweller redefines the standards for ultra toughest as it is over 4x tougher than the Submariner at 1220m/4000ft water resistance, fitted with a Helium Escape Valve. It is definitely the State of the Art toughest combined with bullet proof reliability at the time. And it did served me extremely well....that is until the next level of cutting edge toughest and accuracy emerged in the form of Seiko Spring Drive that totally eclipses the functionality offered by any Swiss mechanical watch movement. Few people are aware of how robust the Spring Drive mechanism is. And even fewer would be aware why the inventor is so adamant that the energy storage mechanism must be free from battery or capacitor as energy storage solutions, because both can leak and fail under extreme conditions. By removing the battery and capacitor as weak points in a watch movement, the Spring Drive is capable of maintaining ultra high accuracy even under extreme temperature swings, which no other Swiss Watch movements can ever achieve. The evidence can be seen from the creation of the Seiko Spacewalk and the Seiko Landmaster Miura Everest. Both models have extremely robust versions of the Spring Drive, enabling them to handle under - 40C extreme conditions. In fact, - 41C is the lowest recorded temperature on the peak of Mount Everest recorded in December 2004. The beauty with Spring Drive is its perpetual negative feedback monitoring loop. Regardless of how the internal metal components reacts towards the temperature, the Spring Drive will adapt and adjust the induction braking in real-time. This self-correcting mechanism is ingenuous. You won't find that in any Swiss movement. My SBDB007 Miura Everest achieves a very consistent +2sec/month, since the first day i bought mine, almost a decade ago. My Rolex Sea Dweller would be lucky to achieve this accuracy in just a day 😅🤣🤣🤣 The full Titanium construction of the Miura Everest is also extremely robust. I feel honoured and very luckily to be one of the very few 300 individuals to own such a technical marvel in time keeping technology, which i shall treasure for the lifetime. I think for people who values accuracy, toughest and reliability as the end game in time keeping, the Seiko Spring Drive is the closest thing to perfection.

Your videos are so informative, but please try to avoid that fake accent, which turns incomprehensible in most parts.

For my feeling, spring drive will one day be in every simple Seiko. Same as kinetic before. Automatic is still and will always be heritage watchmaking

I can't see that happening. That'll cheapen every GS and damage the luxury reputation they're aiming for.

@@googleuser7632 There is already a Seiko with spring drive.

Seiko at times did make some bad decisions on where to put their Spring Drives into. SD already invaded the Seiko space (Prospex, Presage and others) so it is not exclusive to GS and the pricing is hilarious. Might as well one gets the GS

Don’t you mean quartz versus mechanical????!!!! I can hear the comments now! IT’S NOT QUARTZ MFer!!!! Yes…yes it is!
@klching474111 ай бұрын
Yes, it’s a quartz movement which does not require battery and perfect sweep. Tell me which other watch can do that.
