The NOMINATION is, probably, going to happen, even with just 6 games, but the win...? Not that it wouldn't make sense/be deserving, but...Last of Us II over Hades, anyone? It'll win Best RPG easily, but it WON'T win the TGA's main prize. The nomination is the victory for this isometric RPG throwback. I'd say the win fight is probably between two or three games: Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4 and, maybe, Like a Dragon Gaiden.

Hi Fi Rush has been the most delightful game I've played in the past 5 years. Its so refreshing to see such a whimsical and charming and heartfelt game come out in current year. I'm not really much for action-based hack-and-slash type gamee, and I'm bad at keeping the beat. But I wanted to support a game like this, and I've had an absolute blast despite that. 10/10 game. Released in January and immediatly. cemented itself as GOTY immediatel.

Fun easter egg, if you replay Chapter 3 where you encounter the Z-shield robot for the first time and use Macaroon's ability to break his shielding, CNMN will comment on this and call Chai out for cheating since it's not how to story is supposed to.

One of my favorite jokes is in chapter 3 in post-game, where if you defeat the enemy with Z-Shielding (before you're supposed to get Macaron), CNMN will simply say "Do not worry, I will activate the cutscene as usual." And the game will just play the cutscene that was supposed to play.

On the note of a certain licensed track you mentioned, I grew up on rock & techno. My dad even does his own mixes. So when I got to the cafeteria on my first run & INSTANTLY recognized the buildup melody to Invaders Must Die, the grin on my face as I proceeded to wreck house was MASSIVE. I didn't recall seeing Prodigy in the trailer so it was one of the best surprises in the game for me.

Best shadow drop ever. I still haven't gotten around to playing it yet but it's still one of my favourite games of the year. I would love to see more action games get made with a rhythm mechanic or just a straight up sequel with a deeper combat system. Hi-Fi Rush also gives me Viewtiful Joe vibes and I want a Viewtiful Joe 3 because of it.

No Straight Roads was a nice one too. Good debut game by its respective studio, which at first glance may make people think of Hi-Fi Rush, but it's quite different. Much more boss-centric, shorter, not super complex, and the focus of the entire story is on music as a whole and the industry, with bosses seemingly representing the different ways why people want to take up making music, and how the industry further shapes them. There was also God of Rock. Weird mix of Fighter and Rhythm game. Interesting art direction and nice soundtrack, though.

Hi-Fi Rush came outta nowhere, is part of one of my favourite recent genres (rhythm-hybrid games like NecroDancer and Mad Rat Dead), released relatively bug free and completely without MTX. I don't care if other games took more effort to make and are on a grander scale - THIS is my personal Game Of The Year. (Also, hot take: Streamer Mode's songs are better than the licenced stuff.)

The game industry needs more games like this. What do I mean? I mean on paper, this game had EVERYTHING going AGAINST it. A totally brand new IP with super bright and colorful visuals that combined hack and slash and rhythm game elements from a AAA studio of horror game devs just suddenly releasing this game with practically ZERO marketing and for free for Xbox Game Pass users right off the bat no less. I mean all of that is practically DESTINED for failure! But the game managed to rise above all that and get TONS of people to ADORE it and spread it around practically through word of mouth, *simply by just being a good game!* With all the games these days that get lambasted with crap because of microtransaction scams, political/social controversies or games that get so much marketing but turns out to be mediocre, we need more games from big AAA studios that can just make us all come together and get behind it to make it a big success not by relying on trying to be the next biggest game ever or the next Citizen Kane of games or attempt cheap business tactics or gimmicks, but by just being a simple good game in its own right.

Marco is the sort of insider who can also do hacking, cinnamin is just destraction the bot, peppermint is more the main supporter of the group given she's the one who knows the absolute most about augments and robotics while still having hacking in her toolkit as referenced by her often speaking through 808 and even managing to jury-rig a spectra setup to hack chai's robot parts and have that comedy scene, korsica is the full on insider who knows EVERYTHING about the places where chai goes after she gets on board the squad, and chai Is basically the muscle while also sometimes being dumb as rocks and somehow having charisma strong enough to get these alies to help him out through things

Thanks for giving me the motivation to finally play this amazing game, Ben. There are so many highlights for this game, from the great boss fights, to the awesome gameplay and music, to 808 being an adorable yet fierce mascot. Though personally, my favorite part of the game is the “Can’t Stop Us Now” cutscene where the characters fight completely to the beat, which makes it so satisfying.

21:13 It's funny you mention that, because there is actually a way to destroy the barriers and Z-shields much faster. Upgrading the summons gives you access to a special call that you can burn your charged summon on after a successful parry. Matching your call and landing one of these does double the damage to the barrier/Z-shielding, letting you skip having to wait for your call to recharge before doing actual damage, and rewarding your good rhythm with a higher score and lower clear time.

There's actually another way with the barrier guys in specific too where you can actually parry the barrier activation and they won't be able to bring up another one for a while.

Hi-Fi Rush to me is the definition of a game I love and hate. I love the art style, the soundtracks, the writing, and the idea behind the combat. But I have no sense of rhythm at all so I suck at the game and hated the parry mechanic as a result. Korsica's boss fight took me an hour to beat because of this. So yeah I'm glad I played the game but I won't be playing it again for a long while. P.S. I love that you brought up the decaf running gag because that was easily my favorite joke in the game. Also CNMN is my favorite character.

Admittedly, I don't have a lot of experience with rhythm games, I dabbled in Ice Cream Beat from Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep and the rhythm game KH Melody of Memories but those are the only full rhythm based experiences I've had, I'm sure I've played some other games with rhythm-style games in them but none come to mind at the moment, but I digress. I'm actually kinda interested in Hi-Fi Rush, but my problem is I don't have the specs to run it smoothly, in the future I'd like to get a PC that can run some modern stuff at a minimum of 1080P or 1440P at 60FPS. I love the cel-shaded look of Hi-Fi Rush, and the game looks fun to play whether you're on beat or not. I will update whenever I have a chance to play this game.

On a personal note, this game was released the SAME DAY as Forspoken, a Square Enix game which received middling reviews and was deemed a financial failure. With largely cringeworthy attempts at humor that sounds like it was written by the Chart Guys from the Nostalgia Critic. Hi-Fi Rush on the other hand goes: "Hold my beer. THIS is how you do comedy!"

My main issue with the game is that you only unlock the character customization after beating the story. Yeah, theres a bunch of stuff to do after, but I didnt feel like playing the side content. I love character customization in games so its annoying when I beat the game then it suddenly gives me outfit customizing out of nowhere.

Only a few complaints about this absolutely great game. Platforming is stiff, chip system is limited (especially after you upgrade them & with one of them being a literal gag), and I didn't feel the need to buy all the special attacks since the one the game gives you for free does everything I need. Other than that, this is one of the best games I've ever played!
