HIAB: Boom Ext. Cylinder Repair

How did you guys get the spanner nuts off? Is spanner the correct name for the nut? Do you have the too from Hiab or have you made your own?

Hey, thought I would reach out one more time for a little guidance. I had a socket made up to get the nuts off. I go the cylinders out the 2 feet i needed to tighten the leaky connection. Got it back together and now for some reason the cylinder on the upper left side, when looking in from the tip of the crane, wont stay in place. It now moves inside and sometimes blocks the crane from retracting fully. Would you have an idea of why this may be happening? what holds the cylinders together?

Hi there, There's 4 pins that hold the 4 cylinders together if one of those pins aren't in the right hole then it will cause the boom to not retract correctly

The boom sections do not need to be removed. That is a lot more work.

it might seem that way, but to reseal the first cylinder gland i think it does :)

@@Hydraulic_Solutions no definitely doesn’t. I have taken many packs out and walked many more through the repair. Unpin four pins leave the first pin at the knuckle in. Extend cylinder out and then remove pin. Pull the pack out. Then reverse to install. Or just pull all five and slide out. This will require pry bar to reinstall as the cylinder has to be helped over a bracket this way.

Hey Village. I think I could use a little guidance myself. I purchased a 2011 truck with a Hiab 435k this year. I have never owned one or operated one before. I was using the crane yesterday and oil started leaking pretty good out the tip of the crane. Are their any diagrams online that may show visually the process your are describing? I live an hour away from a reputable dealer for repairs and who know a when they would be able to get to my truck. I’m thinking I should try and repair this myself. Any help would be much appreciated.

@@the_village_idiotso this is the 4th time I have tried to reply but something keep happening to it. If this doesn’t get deleted… could you tell me the size of the spanner socket I need? Thanks. Oh and would you have a guess at how much the rams would weigh together. I have a tmz-50 genie I was thinking to use to pluck them out. It has a 500lbs capacity. I’m thinking the rams are probably more than500lbs.
