It is absolutely there. Kumiko says it's a confession of love, this is clearly a romantic scene. It's just not a love that works out. Nobody ends up with their first love, that's just almost never how it works. Kumiko is still absolutely 100% gay as hell.

well i cant completely agree with you. although base on the story we can understand such point. however the yuri thing is obviously intentional by kyoani. they sort of blurring the line of their friendship and yuri. however I dn't think ppl should be so flamed when season 2 kumiko has more stories with asuka instead of reina. in regards of this, they obviously dn't get the point of the whole story.

in the novel itself, the yuri thing was not so emphasised, and compare with asuka, reina's character really not weighting that much. So here it is obvious that every yuri moment is intentional by kyoani. well I have been a big fan of kyoani and I can fully understand their intention since they are also a fan of yuri. So to be honest, although the story is not really about yuri love, but it's under the umbrella of the yuri anime. so i think u cant really deny it's not yuri at the same time. However what piss me off is when ppl only see it as an yuri anime and neglect the whole story development. and I think when japanese fantasise yuri story, every thing is still under the shadow of real life experience. I wouldn't be surprise if they do exist. but please also understands scenes like these are intentionally made. That's how kyoani plays with black long hair girls, they love it a bit gay.

yeahyeahnatnat I understand how the yuri shipping might piss people of who experience this as limiting the story to that relationship. But if it wasn't for that the anime might not even have been that succesfull. The novel apparently wasn't very succesfull and i can rather see why. I read a few pages and it was very cliché by the book writing from an author obviously trying to copy very unoriginal seinen storytelling and a lot of that still caries over to the anime. Plus the subject is not going to appeal to a large audience. It seems the studio only wanted to adapt the novel because it takes place in Kyoto. Then they added the non existing yuri to attract shippers who would give it free advertisement. I'm only here for fantasizing about this relationship really, even being aware in truth it's just a close friendship. But alltough i think the second season suffered from too much high drama and cliché, i did enjoy the first season a lot aside from the shipping. Also: i'm not critisising Kumiko's arc with her sister and Asuka which was completely about her personal development as a euphonium player, while the first season was about her development as a musician, but i do think it was illogical she and Reina didn't talk about this. From a narrative view i understand the reason, but from a human relations view that really didn't make sense.

Well I am not sure how you define if the anime is successful or not. because in terms of sales, it's not like a big hit, it is just doing okay, not particularly good. and even though aware of that kyoani still decide to make a season 2 plus two new movies next year. I think the studio picks this novel has more reasons behind rather than just becasue the setting is in kyoto. This anime really shows the kind of anime that kyoani wants to create atm, at least for me as a fan of this studio, I can tell this anime is very Kyoani like. they know how to make a simple story more attractive. and for the illogical part, actually kumiko sort of discussed it with reina when reina brought the euphonium CD to visit her home, it's just that afterwards reina finds out about kumiko lying about taki sensei's wife and she took a distance with kumiko for a while. besides that they are not the same class at sch, so they dn't really meet each other except when they are practicing. but yeah that's the narrative view LOL. Guess i'm the only one who is enjoying the yuri plus the story+character development in both seasons @.@

This is probably a thing friends do? I've consumed a lot of romantic manga, gay and straight, and the whole hand-on-face thing is always portrayed as something romantic. And I rarely see friends in manga do this to each other; that's probably why I'm reading it as something romantic. But it's not. I still find it to be a really intimate action though, and not one I'll ever do with my friends unless they're sobbing their eyes out over something. Something about the action is just so tender and warm.
