Okay, so it turns out that there is already a firmware update that fixes the volume issue. Furthermore, the update has (so far) eliminated the crashes I was getting in the music browser too. I wish they wouldn't rush releases, but I guess they wanted to take a bite out of the holiday sales. These 2 fixes alone make a huge improvement in the user experience, making this one of the best budget DAPs on the market IMO.

I really like the compact size, and the power output is good enough to drive most IEMs.
@PrimeAudioReviews15 күн бұрын
Yes, indeed, it is!

Are you able to adjust volume and skip tracks with the screen off? That seems to be a problem with a lot of DAPs and is a deal breaker for me.
@PrimeAudioReviews8 күн бұрын
Yes you can.

R1 is easier to navigate, especially if you have big fingers. Audibly, there's not much difference in audio quality but the Shanling is a touch warmer.
@ernstpeterlegrand2 күн бұрын
@PrimeAudioReviews thanks, good information. Probably the warmness I wouldn't need as my iem are already warmisch. So it would maybe be too much. I like of the r1 the tidal as I am a subscriber

The update 1.1 is already available. It resolves the volume issue and some other bugs. This is my very first DAP, so I'm learning a lot of new things. I like that I'm able to transfer audio files from my smartphone to the R1 via Wifi. I'm very happy with this device, but I'm still on the hunt for a good set of neutral IEM that could make a good pair to this Hiby R1. Any recommendations?

relatively new to the hobby, how can I listen to this with 4.4mm iems? Can I use my btr15 or that's not something you do
@PrimeAudioReviews10 күн бұрын
You could buy a 4.4mm female to 3.5mm male adapter or a replacement cable.

With its size, battery life, buttons it could be a great Bluetooth receiver.

Yeah, that's a good idea.

SO the volume lock is cuz its a chinese and eu safety law where daps or other electronic stuff cant have above 50+ volume

Does it do gapless. Important for prog and jazz. It accepts 2 tb cards, but does the library still have the 10 000 song limitation? Cheers
@PrimeAudioReviews13 күн бұрын
Yes, it does gapless. I'm not sure about the song limit.

I only use a ja11 dongle for my Explorer and that seems to be enough. I think any Fiio dongle with peq would be a nice pairing with this tiny dap.
@PrimeAudioReviews15 күн бұрын
You haven't tried MSEB yet! Also, using a dongle DAC with a DAP (which has a DAC) is kinda crazy.
@Helmond201714 күн бұрын
@PrimeAudioReviews haha yeah I had the r3 pro saber and the R2. MSEB is my most favorite thing in the Hiby os, besides the Hiby connect thing. And yeah using a dongle with a dap makes no sense, but I've seen a lot of people doing this lol.

Yeah, I always use USD in my reviews. I'm trying to get into the habit of saying USD because I know it can be misleading. It's still good value for $130 AUD though.

Even the final iPod Classic had better album art loading and retention than this thing, and it was manufactured 17 years ago for fuck's sake... Typical Chinese junk, really. Almost two decades later and they still can't muster up the mainboard manufacturing or firmware coding prowess to rival an iPod Classic 6th Gen v2 from 2007. My iPod Nano 6th Gen from 2010 has less scroll jankiness than this thing, and the board on that thing is only twice the size of my fucken thumbnail.

Deal breakers: No memory of previously volume, low output, frequent crashes, and slow implementation of ui Basically a horrible UI implementation. Why would anyone waste any money on a rush to market insufficient and inept player. You should have in interview simply said, can't recommend at any price with all the problems.

they getting updates so i hope they fix it
@roberto8ag15 күн бұрын
There is an update (1.1) that resolves a lot of bugs. I just had it delivered to me a couple days a go and updated it right away, so I don't have the experience of the 1.0 version. I haven't found anything that I dislike about this device.
@PrimeAudioReviews15 күн бұрын
This is true. I will pin a comment regarding the update.

Why doesn't anyone sell such a small dap that can run android and therefore install Spotify and utilise its offline downloads function? All I see are the overpriced/expensive Sony now 306 or the bulky Hiby m300....any other suggestions people?
@versacepapi35014 күн бұрын
If only there were a device that everyone carried around in their pocket that had this functionality 🤔🤔
@pokeken14 күн бұрын
@versacepapi350 so clearly you don't bother watching these videos about daps where the reviewers confirm the rationale for needing a dap plus your phone (size, sound, buttons, heat issues etc etc). Why even bother commenting on something you don't even believe in? Go find somewhere else to polish your ego in silence
@versacepapi35014 күн бұрын
@ I’m really just trying to imagine buying any specialized audio device to play _MP3s_ The rationale for a DAP is that you own a bunch of FLACs and want to be able to listen to them on-the-go through a decent DAC/amp. But stay salty

Android requires faster modern cpu. Otherwise it'll be a horrible slow n sluggish user experience. Faster cpu eat through battery so a small and slim device is not doable. Unless you settle for battery life of 3 hour or less.
