犬山市にある京都大学霊長類研究所のチンパンジー、アユムは１９までの数字を小さい順に答えることができる。こうした「順番を覚える」能力が、他の霊長類にもあることがわかった。場所は京都市動物園。京都大学霊長類研究所出身の研究者が、観客の前で最新の成果を公開している。マンドリル、テナガザル、そしてゴリラ！もうすぐ３歳の子ゴリラ、ゲンタロウの数奇な生い立ちと、成績優秀の秘密にせまる。

Gentaro is so special! Unfortunately, he's overlooked with the majority of commenters favoring Kintaro. Gent at 3 years old and he knows his numbers ..more advanced than some human children at 3. Gentero is definitely a daddy's boy. Notice how Genki doesn't baby him like she does Kintaro. I"ve watched many early videos of how differently she treats Gentaro as a baby to how she treats Kintaro and it is sad...when Kintaro was born he would mess with Genki because he was hurting inside and I think Genki knows it she is a smart cookie...I 💘 that boy!

Thank you so much for posting this. Knowing only the story of Gentaro's birth and first 10 months with carers, this video is so meaningful. Thank you to his carers for taking such good care of him. Genki's confusion at first when being presented with her precious Gentaro is sad in that she may have convinced herself that she would never have him. But her maternal instinct and joy just blossomed quickly. And Gentaro at this age and through today is precious. Gentaro is a deep thinker so it is no surprise that he would master the numbers. Kintaro, his younger brother, is also smart and quick but he has a different temperament. It would seem easy to create number games which would teach basic math. The gorillas who are kept in limited spaces need challenges and stimulation.
