I have owned a Ruger No.1 338WM since 1996, and it is my favourite hunting rifle (African bush) for the following reasons: It is as fast as a shotgun and actually has the same safety mechanism - you never miss on a 1 second quick opportunity; Even with a 26" barrel, it is far shorter and lighter than any bolt action rifle - it is a pleasure to walk with it the whole day long; There is no drop in the heel of the stock and recoil is only backwards - no problem of hitting the eye with a mounted scope.

Classic Rifle. Someone once wrote ‘have you ever met a hunter carrying a single shot rifle who did not know what they were doing?’. I liked that line. Awesome calibre! Like the way it could take down a Grizzly in self defence but still flat shooting at long range. Thank you 🇺🇸 🇳🇿

I've never shot a Ruger #1 but I've owned a nearly 50 year old Browning Model 78 in 25-06 since it was new. By far, that falling block single shot is my favorite rifle. The single shots are just so very solid and elegant.

I've owned several #1's in various calibers. The accuracy varies from acceptable to cant hit a barn at 40 yards. I had a .22-250 one that basically shot patterns at 100 yards and then a .416 Rigby that stacked them inside an inch at 100. They are incredibly finicky rifles due to everything hanging off the barrel
@oldad6207
@oldad6207 Жыл бұрын
@@gearjammergamer8560 The B-78 has a square bar affixed to the action, underneath the barrel. The barrel is completely free-floated. I used that 25-06 all summer for groundhogs. I knocked off a pickup truck full of those little rascals at ranges out to 450 yards.

Walking softly but also carrying a big stick. Beautiful bit of kit and very capable chambering. During my hunting career, long since retired, I toted my faithful number one “ Tropical “ over many a hill and dale. Pretty much anywhere I could carry a gun. In reliable Holland & Holland .375 magnum loading. She has fallen silent now but she sits in a very proud corner of my rifle cabinet. A wooden cabinet my dear mother had made for a gift for me so many years ago. Nicknamed the New Jersey the famous battleship that rifle is a treasure to me and one would be hard pressed to identify it from new. From forty below to a hundred and ten the Leopold scope 3X9 and firearm was as rock in dependable reliability. Before transitioning from my Winchester model 70 A in 30 06 caliber. Largest bull elk taken with that rifle was six point with 56” between widest point of inside antlers. Got the urge for a .375 and bought my Tropical. It served me well also and over the years it took 25 mule deer 🦌 bucks and 12 bull elk largest a six point as well but not as that magnificent first bull.

I've always loved the simplicity of a single shot. I have a few, but never a Ruger No 1, but its on my list of rifles I hope to own one day. My Dad had one in 45-70 that I really wanted, but he traded it to my Uncle for something. I always feel like a single shot makes me a better hunter. I always try for 1 sot 1 kill, but a single shot keeps that in the back of mind more.

I have had a Ruger #1 in a wildcat 30-338 since 1984. Extremely accurate and flat shooting gun. One thing you can do with a #1 is sand the interior of the wood on the forearm to increase the space between the wood and the barrel. The forearm is held onto the barrel with a single screw to a forearm hanger. If the wood is touching the barrel, as the barrel heats up it will push on the wood and the point of aim will change and the rifle will become less accurate as the barrel vibration changes continually as the barrel expands. Providing a slightly larger clearance between the forearm and the barrel eliminates the problem. It's the opposite of bedding the barrel because the gun has a separate stock and forearm.

My hunting rifles have always been Rugers. My 1st and 2nd was the M77 chambered in 270 and 7mm magnum. My oldest son also chose the Ruger in 7mm magnum. As far as the Ruger No1 I absolutely love the craftsmanship and quality put into every one. I will own one in either the hard hitting 338 or possibly the super fast velocity of the Ruger 204. No matter the caliber, it’s the quality as well as the piece of firearm history that I would hope would stay passed down for generations in my family. I own an Over/under 16 ga Merkel shotgun. An absolutely beautiful, and amazing craftsmanship but to me, the No1 is atleast equal to if not surpasses the craftsmanship of the very respectable Merkel. That’s saying a lot when considering the monetary value of each firearm. In other words, the No1 is extremely an incredible work of art which can be bought at a fraction of what it’s worth.

What a fine piece of steel. Thank you, as always, Hickok! I wish Federal would make plinking ammo with cheap FMJ bullets in .338 Win Mag. It saddens me a bit to see those Partitions used this way. Norma makes those, but they're not cheap. One time at a range, I shot 30 rounds and ended up with a very bruised shoulder. But it was a blast and a very memorable evening.

Another wonderful video. Topic rich and great to see a big magnum at work. Which I could not justify having. Yes a wonderful topic in the calibre it's origins and the falling block No1. Sturm Ruger. As it was when I first discovered Ruger. I did have a SR 10/22.

Hickok have you ever visited the Browning Warehouse in Missouri? I work there and I think you'd like it. I can talk to my boss about it.

Commemorative/special/collector edition guns are about the worst investment you could ever make. They never end up being worth significantly more than the standard versions of the same guns if both were in the same condition. And People generally never fire them, so they really aren’t missing out on anything VS just investing in stocks or bonds. If that person invested the price of that ruger in the SP500 in 1996 and held it until today they would’ve made 400% on that money. Selling it to Hickok I doubt they made more than double what they paid. And after inflation that’s not all that great for holding something for decades.

I agree. There are much better ways to invest money if that's the goal. Any good Index fund will return more than these collector series firearms. There might be an exception, but I'm not aware of it.

It should be adjustable to extract or eject. You can find the owner's manual on the Ruger website or you can order a hard copy from them as per the message on the barrel.

I have a medium spotter in .338 Win. Mag. And I finally broke down and put on a scope. Didn’t want to but missed out on a nice bull elk last season because of low light in timber. In order to determine if it was large enough to shoot I needed my binoculars. By the time I got the rifle up and squeezed off that big guy turned. I was only moments late. 21:24

I had a friend, Larry, that was spontaneous about going out and buying a gun, that no one where I grew up at would possibly own one like it. So he goes and buys a Ruger No. 1 in 458 Win. , brand new around 1993. He allowed me to shoot the first round though it after he had purchased it. Hadn’t thought about that in years. Accurate rifle for sure.
