-------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, this channel is created and managed by Hickok45 and John, mainly John. The video clips on this channel are segments of videos taken from videos originally posted on the Hickok45 KZbin channel. John always includes a link to the original video from which the clip is taken.
Hickok45 videos are filmed on my own private shooting range and property by trained professionals for educational and entertainment purposes only, with emphasis on firearms safety and responsible gun ownership. We are NOT in the business of selling firearms or performing modifications on them. Do not attempt to copy at home anything you see in our videos. Firearms can be extremely dangerous if not used safely.

I've got an old Navy Arms double 12 muzzleloader that I bought back in the early 80s. It was advertised as being able to handle 10 gauge loads of powder and shot. My hunting load is 1 3/8oz of shot and about 100grs of FFG. I've used it on about everything you can use a modern shotgun on. Mostly squirrels, rabbits and quail these days. Before steelshot was mandated, I used it on ducks with good luck. And I've used it deer hunting with patched .690 round balls. That ol shotgun does it all. Whenever I have it out, I tell folks that I'm not sure that those new fangled cartridge guns are going to catch on.
@tenlittleindians
@tenlittleindians 3 күн бұрын
I used a 20 gauge muzzle loader for ducks in the 70's on opening day of the season. My friends had all run out of ammo by 10:00 in the morning but I was still blasting away. I used the plastic shot wads sold for reloading shot shells and a small piece of toilet paper as the over shot wad. The plastic wads patterned tighter and eliminated the need for the disk over your powder which made reloading faster. The plastic wads easily slid down my barrels too. I had made a long brass measuring spout to fit on my flask commonly used for pistols. I sized it to hold enough powder for my shotgun. I also had a leather shot flask with a measure on the end. I could get off two shots and reload fairly quick for a muzzle loader. I found out the 50 caliber balls for my Thompson muzzle loader rifle fit perfect inside those 20 gauge shot wads I was using. For deer season I'd load 2 of those 50 caliber balls into the shot wad in each barrel of that muzzle loader. They grouped about 2 inches apart at 50 yards.

Such a fun toy and lethal with that number 4 buck, FUN FACT - Some people think that the phrase "He shot his wad! " has some intimate physical romance type meaning but this is NOT the case. From Revolutionary times, if a soldier was in battle and in the rush to reload before an advancing enemy could get to him, the soldier may panic and fire before he loaded his shot- thus "shooting his wad " would do nothing beyond making a boom, and he would likely come to a bad end.

@joerobo682 The government defines an "antique firearm" as a firearm made before 1898, or any replica thereof, that does not use fixed ammunition (rimfire or centerfire) that is readily available in modern commerce channels. That covers quite a few, but not all, guns made before 1898 and their precisely-built modern replicas.

From years of experience with muzzleloaders I'm paranoid of pushing the ramrod down the barrel on a load with my bare palm. You waited awhile for embers ro fade before doing that, but to me it's a bad habit. You can use any smooth piece of wood with a dimple drilled in it to put over the rod. I simply drilled a shallow hole in the side of my short starter to slip over the ramrod and push a load home. It's more comfortable and would more likely push your hand aside on accidental ignition rather than putting the rod through your palm. Thanks again for the fine videos.

I've owned the same gun for the last 4 years now. Mine loves .570" roundballs and .310 roundballs. I either use them as 00 buckshot by themselves or with the .570" as a buck n ball load with 70 grains of FFG powder. I have patterned it out to 25 yards with #4 shot and it does surprisingly well. It was a copy of a Confederate shotgun used during the Civil War. I swapped the #11 nipples out with Pedersoli musket cap nipples because musket caps are easier for me to get and it made the ignition pretty much a certainty every time.
@mildlydisinterested
@mildlydisinterested 3 күн бұрын
I grew up shooting black powder and was always taught to seal lips around the barrel and blow until no smoke comes out of the nipple or flash pan. I've been to countless NMLRA shoots and rendezvous and most guys around me were doing it that way and not once have I seen an ND as a result. That's not the only way, just a faster way. The other methods mentioned are equally as valid. The bonus to blowing is that when the smoke stops, you have a visual indicator that everything has burned out. One should never blow down the barrel on the last shot of the day, however. You don't want corrosion. You should be cleaning it as soon as you get it home, or even in the field, but just the same. 🙂
@paulharm3943
@paulharm3943 10 сағат бұрын
I 've shot muzzleloading pistols rifles and shotguns for more than 50 years. You can blow down the barrel or use a grease cleaning batch to make sure there's no hot embers. When reloading a shotgun as you push the overpowered powder hardcard down you will be compressing quite a bit of air. The card will want to come back up a couple of inches. For this reason you kind of throw the rod down two or three times to make sure the card is seated on the powder. You can push the rod the second time and throw it to make sure the wad is seated. Same goes for the cushion wad, make sure it's seated and compressed air has not held it up. You can also wet or dampen the cushion wad so it will clean the barrel every time you push one down. Don't use plastic wads they'll melt in the barrel and make it hard to clean. Circle fly.com sells fiber wads use 1 gauge larger than the bore for a good tight fit.

In France, you can be delivered "regular guns" by postal services, also in france, postmen took as an habit not to ring the doorbells and straight up throw the parcels in your garden

A limited amount of firearms pass through the post office. Rifles and shotguns may be mailed with the US Postal Service. Anyone my mail to anyone in their home state. Anyone may mail a federal license holder in any state. Shipper must sign an affidavit that they are not a manufacturer, dealer or importer. Signature delivery.

Look at those weapons of war shipping right to your door! Now if we could only get things newer than black powder shipped to our doors.

It would be nice if that 1899 thing was a moving scale. Like we ought to call anything 100 years old or more antique. Then we could get old Springfields and Arisakas and SMLEs and 1911s with no FFL BS and no C&R hassle.

Growing up with a dad that is a ffl holder, we frequently got guns shipped to our door. Sometimes ups would wreck the box so bad the barrel was literally hanging out. Lol.

A “sawed off shotgun” is a shotgun that has had its barrels sawn short. Don’t confuse the name of the weapon with the way it is made. 😂

I love my Baker shotgun. 50cal one side, 20 gauge the other. Bonus points is the barrel is interchangeable with both my Howdah Pistols. LOL. And came in the mail. Another nice thing is you can make paper cartridges in advance to speed up the loading process. Just nitrate the paper bottom before making them. Unlike my Howdahs, the Baker I ordered is single trigger double pull.

No, it's not a wash or sawed off shotgun. To be sawn or sawed off shotgun it would have to be a long barrel sawed off. That short barrel was originally made that length, not a long one cut down.
