From an American Social Worker: The Young Carer Program would never, could never be a legal subsidized government entity in the US. We have child labor laws to protect children from being exploited. Children starting at age 6 are not emotionally or mentally equipped to handle an adult's medical or situational problems. Children should not morally or ethically be paid by the government to do the work of home health aides, cooks or cleaning services. Studies have indicated that being labelled as a 'young carer" erodes self worth and social standing. Suicide rates are higher among this group as well. Future education and employability are also adversely afftected. There is much shame surrounding the label of "Young Carer."
