So it looks like where I was getting confused was I was waiting for the folding of the white sheet around. I have watched this video too many times to count but I think I finally got it! Thank you so much!!

I am learning so much from these films and the narration is excellent and very clear.

Amazing the information that you explain so thoroughly. I am an amateur binder and sew my signatures but have learned so much. Thank you. I have been using high thread count muslin cotton strips and incorporated the roping edge style since the binding board piece is separate. I make the books for painting and sketching so they have to lay as flat as possible. I learned from one of your vídeos to beat the edge of the bound signatures after glued and dried. Those details you teach make a huge difference as I look back at my very "wonky" first book. Thank you again! Eleven more to go for me besides a very special order. 👍🏼🤗

Oh man, why didn't this video show up in my feed last night, when I was tipping in the endpapers on a sketchbook? Ah well, I do have signatures for at least two more sketchbooks, plus two commonplace books... with three more of the latter waiting for the supplies to be set up. Since the sketchbooks and one of the commonplace books are for me, I won't lack for experimenting material! Next up is case binding, which might seem a bit silly for a 3.5"x5" sketchbook in landscape format, but why not? And given that the pages are 100% cotton 300 gsm watercolor paper, the extra binding strength will probably be a good idea. Quick question (3 years late, but whatever): Could I use a single sheet of cardstock with this method, rather than the made edgepaper? I promise I'll do the proper technique as well at some point, but I have a lot of excess cardstock to work through. (Stupid 2 for 1 sales, they are a weakness of mine.) Thanks!

I've had issues with bubbling. I noticed that I didn't pay attention to the grain of the papers... oops. Papers definitely get terribly wavy and bubbly if the grain is wrong.

Thank you for these thorough videos as usual. I wonder if there is an end paper suitable for a fan adhesive binding that is not simply tipped on. I would love to have a more durable end paper for these books that are not sewn.

I've thought about this awhile, and the problem is that double-fan bindings just aren't very durable anyway. After the obvious weakness, the next one is the attachment to the case, which is true of all case bindings. A simple improvement is to wrap some thin cotton/linen or even scrim/super/crash around the spine and onto the outside of the endpaper, which will go under the pastedown and reenforce the inner joint. Hope this helps. DAS

Thank you so much for all of your very informative content! Where can I buy this cloth for the end papers?

Can the cloth be tipped, folded and then sewn onto the last signature, with the folded endpaper then glued into the cloth fold to hide the sewing? Thanks for all your fantastic videos!

Thank you for this video. he whole process is clearly explained. What kind of cloth is used for this? Regards, Ernesto

I think it was a medium weight bookcloth/buckram that wasn't paper backed. It came from the odd pieces box so I don;t know the name. Starched calico works well. All the best, DAS

Would regular linen cloth work well Here? I'm using chroma book cloth that's backed from talas.
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 4 жыл бұрын
@@squ1sh Sorry, I missed your message. If using regular cloth, maybe size it with paste and let it dry so it is stiff and easier to work with and so adhesive doesn't strike through as much. I have used untreated linen for jobs like this and it is a bit fiddly and the adhesive striking through means you have to let it dry and be carful where you put it down. All the best, DAS

Are you actually sewing through the colored papers, unlike the other endpaper videos where you sew through the white?
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I do in this video. Generally I only sew through the coloured in stationery binding and some split board bindings, such as library style. I would never do this for a "fine" binding. I think I was following Arthur Johnson's design for this, in which case he probably had a split board binding in mind. DAS

@@DASBookbindingI suppose you could still use this general construction in variants where you sew through the white folio instead, or even add an extra folio of white inside the first one to make it “even strongerer”? 😊 But how is a waste sheet added without interfering with the cloth joint? 🤔
@WimWwimw

What is the rationale of tipping the coloured to the white papers and then folding one over? Why not simply sew them concentric like a text section? Also: why don't you make the endpaper-sections but until the textblock is finished. Wouldn't it be much easier to make them beforehand and sew them with the text sections all in one go?
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding Жыл бұрын
The white folded around provides a waste sheet to protect the book while it is being bound, and is removed near the very end of the binding process. The next interesting questions is, why add the waste sheet that way? I may have think about this and answer it in a future video. Your other questions can also have a long answer, but the short answer is that I'm often not organised enough to have made the endpapers before sewing the text, and thus add them later. The longer answer has to do with the production of books in a trade bindery in the 19th and early 20th century, which is a different organisational problem to mine, but with the same result. I often sew the endpapers like they are just 2 extra sections.

Question? The stitching is exposed in the fold of the endpapers. Why not sew thru fold of cloth joint so the sewing is hidden?

I assume the join won't be stable or strong enough. The fabric in this method is mostly for reinforcement purposes.

Just wondering why you decided to sew through the coloured and not the white?
@DASBookbinding

Because I was following Johnson. You're right, this is strange for letterpress work and his example 9 would be better.

you did it wrong - you stitched a endpaper instead of white paper, look like Johnson

You lost me a bit. But yes, you can hook some cloth around the endpapers and first/last section. It's a different endpaper configuration, but there is an almost endless number of ways to make endpapers. Have fun! DAS
