In 1972 I was taken by my parents to dine at the 54th - as the restaurant in the TD Tower was called. I will never forget looking down onto the roof of the Royal York hotel and marvelling at how high up we were. I also remember the waiters making Spanish coffees at the table-side, and their showmanship as they poured from a carafe held three feet above the cup. Haven’t been anywhere quite so spectacularly impressive since!

My Dad took me to the observation deck at the TD Centre shortly after it opened in 1969. Still remember it like it was yesterday. That was the beginning of modern Toronto. Now, Toronto's future is world-class. Truly one of the world's greatest cities!!

I remember visiting the tower in 1968 and ascending an express elevator to the 56th floor where there was a museum of Inuit art and the far shore was visible that day !

The thing that always stood out to me about TD Centre is the high quality of the materials used. Frankly, if you walk around in the banking area or the towers, everything looks simultaneously retro 1967 archaic and yet looking shining new. Mies only used the best stuff, and his buildings last without aging.

I worked in the South tower in the 1990s, the view out my window was the plaza beside the main tower, where office workers would congregate among the bronze cattle for lunch when the weather was nice. Our decor was nothing special, just your typical Steelcase cubicle farm/veal calf pens, but the meeting room was nice, and still had some original Barcelona chairs in the lobby. The South tower also had a great collection of Inuit sculptures on the second floor. What struck me about the place was the high quality of the materials, and the tastefully spare design. Later office towers along King and Wellington have loads of chromed mullions, blue-tinted glass and highly polished granite, and they now look tacky and shabby, very late 80s faded glitz, like a 15-year-old's idea of "rich". The TD towers still look fresh and brand new. If only the workers in the Towers dressed as nicely now as they did in the late '60s...

Why do TD Bank employees express measurements in "feet"? Like the board room table for example? Canada was supposed to metric, but perhaps the U.S. does not really permit it, since they are also unable to convert to metric system.
@dutchcanuck75506 ай бұрын
You are correct. Construction and Real Estate in Canada still follows the Imperial system (inches/feet/yards). Why? Because Canada is one of the largest manufacturers of construction materials, and its biggest customer is the United States, who buys something like 90% of what Canada produces. As a result, commercial real estate here is still built, costed out, and rented by the square foot, not square meter. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, the TD Centre was constructed in the 1960s using the Imperial system, and the entire campus and nearly all the interior spaces are constructed on a precise 16-square-foot grid. Converting everything to metric for the video would probably sound silly.

"Mid-century modern" isn't a term used in the world of architecture. It's a term for a style of interior decor widespread from about 1945 to 1970. (It wasn't used at that time, though. It came into wide use in the last ~20 years.) The TD Centre is in the _International Style._ And it was not the first of that type in Toronto. These are basic facts, not obscure or highly specialized ones.

There's another time capsule in one of the towers. Near the end of construction one of the steel beams was painted yellow and set on low blocks in the square in front of the building. My mother took my brother and I downtown and when she realized we actually could write our names on it, she gave us her lipstick and we wrote our names on the beam. It was hoisted up and added to the structure. So somewhere at the top of one of the towers is a yellow I-beam with a bunch of graffiti on it including my name and my brother's name in red lipstick. And yes, the scripted dialogue of this video is a bit lame.
