Ikea has some well designed solutions. In Finland, there is usually a traditional dish-drying cabinet over the kitchen sink. The bottom of the cabinet is an open dish draining rack that drains directly into the sink (instead of a solid wood bottom cabinet shelf. Does it make sense to drain dishes on precious counter space, then do another task of putting dishes away in cabinet? Easier and faster just to put wet dishes away in the over sink cabinet while they are still wet, and shut the cabinet door. The dishes drain and dry, behind the cabinet door. Clean and clutter free.

I found this while I actually changed the draining setup in the kitchen..was curious if anyone thought like me .. I disliked having a bulky ugly dish drainer on top of the kitchen countertop . Had an unstructured dish draining mat where I will place all different varieties of dishes like plates and cups and mugs and strainers .. neither did it drain dry properly nor looked good and was a big himalayan task to actually take it and keep it back in storage . So started getting different pieces of draining storage to give the dish drain area a structure . Cutlery and cooking utensil stand , knife tray , cutting boards plates bowls mugs jars all can be drained in one long kettle pan organizer that is rust proof , a hanging self adhesive hook strip for seives strainers peeler etc and a hand towel hanger for silicone mats ... if there was even a hesitation to organize a single space in kitchen specially it leads to a big unnecessary chore in the making... Loved your drain pads and keeping them on the top shelf idea ... will implement in the future
