If the country involved enforces a minimum wage (even if it is small by Western standards), the price per garment might go up a very small amount or the profits may go down slightly, but it would improve the situation. I'd say that the governments have the power, as long as they don't do it too fast as to entice the companies to set up base in another country.

Hello, I work for Texas Woman's University in the Disability Services for Students office. One of our professors is using the following video as a part of their curriculum. Can you either upload accurate captions to this video to make them accessible to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people viewing the video, or will you give me permission to caption the video so that we can get this video captioned before the start of the fall semester? One solution would be to reduce the demand ( become minimalists) and demand for these to be done in the west even with these cheaper labor. Also don't buy branded products unless made in countries demonstrating labor rights like UAE ( is now moving towards this but still some way to go).By the way thank you for making and posting this video.

@yakooza .... The factories started as sweat shops. Over time more and more factories were built so workers had more choices which meant factories then had to cater to the workers in order to bring them in. Where Taiwan used to be as poor or poorer than some countries in Africa, it now boasts a huge economy and is 20 times wealthier than most countries in Africa. Free market which allow easy entry for business allowed that. No one said it would be a smooth transition but it's a lot better.

What I mean by power of the people is if the consumers all said no to buying products created by this type of labour force still wouldn't put a complete end to it. If we didn't want for all the finer things in life at a cheap price, there wouldn't be this sort of thing happening. But all of us want and demand so in its essence, we are to blame for what's going on and the only way to stop is, it to stop our greediness and desires.
@TheDubVee

@yakooza You're not seeing the bigger picture. 40-50 years ago Taiwan was an agrarian society that received much of the U.S. Aid. Now the country is a major foreign investor and contributor of aid money. A quick run through the progression of how that happened and you'll find that the government BOUGHT land from rich landowners who weren't using it and gave it to farmers and said this is your land we encourage you to build. Farms turned into sweat shops and those are now corporations.......

2. Maybe. But it is all theoretical. The fact is that when the IMF and World Bank go into a country and grant them development loans they also require them to do certain things like, reduce trade barriers, privatize industries, cut public spending, and devalue the currency. This last one generally drives consumer prices through the roof. My issue is that most of these economies aren't ready yet for the degree to which they are force to open up.

@martini9799 ... conditions better for the workers. Basically, they will compete for workers. Nike will say hey we'll up wages and cover basic healthcare, Adidas will come along and say we'll give higher wages and cover your family's health care as well. Companies compete for labor like they do for consumers and resources, I mean, labor is a resource it's the evolution of things. It's not pretty but it's the long run that counts. You watch Vietnam 20 years from now barring some catastrophe...

1. I haven't seen any evidence that it necessarily helps the nations as a whole. Mostly it helps elites who benefit from increased investment from abroad. Unfortunately the average person doesn't benefit. Also you might also see overall GDP levels rise without corresponding rises in things that matter such as the Human Development Index which attempts to rate the quality of life. Just because GDP rises doesn't tell us much about how that money is spread around.

What to do with this unequal world? Everything seems hopeless because the advances of rich nations have grown geometrically. Theoretically a person with one dollar will never be able to keep up with a person with two dollars given the same universe of investment opportunities due to compound interest. That holds for entire economies. I come from a rich country and am studying economics. I want to devote my energy to remedying some inequality where I can. I feel guilty but don't know what to do.

When I was in Kuwait, several *maids* each week jumped off roofs to their deaths. I first thought this was quite bizarre...had never heard of it at all until then. So, I asked around and no one would speak of it. Finally, I put 2 + 2 together and read an article discussing one who survived her fall. So, a maid gets impregnated by her master...it is illegal to be pregnant and single in Kuwait...so she goes to jail forever. That Death be a kinder Friend to these women than Life ever chose to be!!!

Free-trade, or restricted trade, will not increase or decrease these peoples wages one bit - what they lack is basic human rights. The right, for example, not to be beaten. The right to rest and relaxation. The right of freedom to peacefully gather. Free-trade is not to blame - it is the values of the people who run the shops, and the people who turn a blind eye to exploitation.

Realize that this corporation problem does not just affect them. It affects you too. The thing about this is that there is a solution. The solution to being treated like a slave/commodity is to start your own firm to produce for a local market. If you don't believe this is going to work, I ask you to look at what caused Japan, Taiwan have boomed and now why China is booming. They did not boom because they were exploited by Nike. It was saving, entrepreneurs and appreciation of skill.

I'm not an expert, but from what I understand they can't run away because then they would have no income, since many of the domestic industries have been destroyed. Because globalization usually results in the domestic industries of a developing country not being protected from foreign competition, those domestic industries are destroyed. This results in massive unemployment and a cheap source of labour that foreign companies, like Nike and Gap can exploit, as shown in this video.

If the Canadian and American government stop buying all products from Bangladesh, the people from Bangladesh will be left hungry and on the street without money to support their families. What you believe is mistreatment in a 3rd world country is the norm. Ask yourself what am i doing to help these people? Are you researching company and corporations that support this kind of starvation wages and labors? Do you buy from these companies ? Maybe you can start an organization that exposes and spreads the harsh reality of 3rd world countries. Raise money from exposure in order to donate money for sanitary conditions to workers, and maybe better proper places to eat. Rather than workers having to sit on roofs in the burning sun, or exposes to cold rain. Maybe think about visiting workers who wish to start a union, even though they might be beaten fired or harassed it would be best for the future of the workers. Begin to ask yourself all of this because once you do. You can begin to create a plan or idea for yourself to help these people. Rather than leaving it up to your god, in which you want to magically descend from heaven to do all of this for you. There is nothing wrong with having faith in an almighty god or creator, but maybe we as people can begin to question and try to solve these problems on our own. Rather than act surprised or complain about these problems in the world. We can truly help these people if we all play our part.

Is there an example in modern history of a single country successfully developing without trading and intergrating with the global economy? No. Export industries often pay higher wages than jobs elsewhere in the economy. New export jobs create more competition for workers, which raises wages everywhere else. If not more trade and economic intergration, then what instead. Workers learn by doing and then take their knowledge with them.

This is a major cause of the global economic collapse. Corporations want to have their cake and eat it to, meaning that they want to sell to the American consumer but they don't want to employ the American consumer. It worked fine when only a few companies did it and then a few more but with most of U..S. manufacturing gone to Asia, American consumers can't consume if they don't have the jobs. This is a dead end that is not being addressed. Without addressing this we are stuck in Depression.

Yay to that idea but it's trying to convince the masses of this. Here in New Zealand, consumers are not loyal. If they can buy cheap, which generally means products manufactured by slave labour, they will. I think it applies to other countries to? Where there's a demand, there will always be atrocities like this. Governments wont intervene because this is money for them. I don't think the power of the people is enough? Perhaps all of us shouldn't be so materialistic?

I have major problems with free trade and I would LOVE to see agricultural subsidies eliminated. Thanks to surpluses, American companies dump surplus goods onto the international market and kill the ability of local industries in poor countries to compete. These places have been forced, yes forced, to open their markets and it has made them ever more reliant on the so-called developed world.

Risk of globalisation. Suppression of workers, hard-line measures. Accumulation of feelings like hatred and anger may leads to revenge. Targets: the origins of these MNCs. There is constructive inequality, meaning "more-work-more-pay". This provides positive motivation. However, destructive inequality including suppression and inaccessibility of assets like education and land, on the other hand, is bad.

Since when did Nike or any of the other companies that provide jobs overseas force their employees to work for them. They work there out of choice. US workers had to fight to get the rights we enjoy, such as a minimum wage and a 40hr week. The corporate servants in our government are doing all they can to erode our rights--the minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation, we get no vacation time or sick days, we have to buy health care with our meager earnings. Do you want America to end up like Bangladesh? Then ORGANIZE YOUR WORKPLACE. Fight "right to work" laws. We are human beings, not instruments from which or bosses extract profit.

Just another example that "Life ain't fair". As human beings we should be outraged at the way our fellow man is so often exploited through no fault of their own. I send money each month to reputable charities but it seems like a "drop in the bucket" when I look at the whole world and the way that billions of us are forced to live. If you can spare $20 or $30 a month research a worthwhile charity and give. If millions of us spoke with one voice at least some things might improve.

And by this video women not even getting any piriorty and not given the chance to communicate. And given that they are only given 2 toilet breaks a day, and maybe 20hrs a day and also another shift starting in less then 4 hrs. That's very hard of globalization.
