కార్తీక మాసము తెలుగు సంవత్సరంలో ఎనిమిదవ నెల. పౌర్ణమి రోజున కృత్తిక నక్షత్రము (అనగా చంద్రుడు కృత్తికా నక్షత్రంతో కలిసిన రోజు) కావున ఈ నెల కార్తీకము.
హిందువులకు ఈ నెల శివుడు, విష్ణువు లిద్దరి పూజ కొరకు చాలా పవిత్రమైనది. ఈ కార్తీకమాసము స్నానములకు, వివిధ వ్రతములకు శుభప్రథమైనది.
స్కంద పురాణంలో ఈ విధంగా పేర్కొనబడినది:
న కార్తికసమో మాసో న కృతేన సమం యుగమ్,
న వేదసదృశం శాస్త్రం న తీర్థం గంగయా సమమ్.
అర్ధం: కార్తీకమాసానికి సమానమైన మాసమేదీ లేదు; సత్యయుగంతో సమానమైన యుగమేదీ లేదు; వేదములతో సమానమైన శాస్త్రమేదీ లేదు; గంగానది వంటి ఇతర నదేదీ లేదు.
చంద్రుడు పూర్ణుడై ఏ నక్షత్రంలో ఉంటాడో, ఆ నక్షత్రం పేరు ఆ మాసానికి వస్తుంది. కృత్తికా నక్షత్రంలో చంద్రుడు పూర్ణుడై సంచరించుట వలన ఈ మాసానికి కార్తీక మాసమని పేరు. కార్తీక మాసమునకు సమానమైన మాసము, విష్ణుదేవునికంటే సమానమైన దేవుడు, వేదములకు సమానమైన శాస్తమ్రులు, గంగకంటే పుణ్యప్రథములైన తీర్థములు లేవన్నది పురాణ వచనం. కార్తీక మాసము అత్యంత పవిత్రమైంది. మహిమాన్వితమైంది. శివ కేశవులకి ప్రీతికరమైన మాసం. ఈ మాసంలో దేశం నలుమూలలా ఉన్న ఆలయాలలో రుద్రాభిషేకాలు, లక్ష బిల్వార్చనలు, రుద్ర పూజలు విశేషంగా జరుపుతారు.
