That's wild there was farming in the 1870's. No a/c, no irrigation. Those were tough buggers.

they had irrigation, the hohokam made the canals in phoenix in 600 CE

They should have huge farms all over Arizona!!! The land grows about anything all you need is water and there's plenty underground!!! There's so much land that could be feeding the world!!!

@@Glenn-em3hvour aquifers have heavy metals like arsenic in them. They can be removed from drinking water. But to remove them at the scale needed for irrigation would cost far too much money. That's why we rely on aboveground canals.

i love how the history is always different from non native eyes.. my family has lived in this scottsdale/phoenix valley before nonnative settlers arrived. my ancestors can be traced here to when they first started tracking natives in the late 1800's. the akimel O'odham lived in this valley for thousands of years, my people have helped non native settlers live and thrive in the desert, they showed people how to farm the land and yet people constantly erase them from the history of the valley! i grew up in a sandwhich house exactly like the one in the video on my reservation, i work in a similar building on the reservation near scottsdale. it's so frustrating to constantly see videos and read information about "founders" of phoenix, scottsdale & tempe when my people were here helping those same individuals cultivate the land and they are so eaily erased from the history of this valley.

Thought you would show the hohokam ruins or maybe the church house Cesar Chavez fasted in. Or mention the canals already being here before the europeans arrived.

Start listening about 1:45, he call them ancient canals. Which is true. A story on the canals should be a whole other story unto itself.❤❤

They should put an open air roof over it "Casa Grande" style to protect it.
@9HighFlyer9
@9HighFlyer9 Ай бұрын
Problem with that is eventually the roof built to protect it becomes "historical." Then it's red tape and more red tape to maintain it.

Yep I’ve heard of the adobe structure on Sherman! Lord Duppa owned that land when he applied for (1/10) of the first land grants in Phoenix and eventually homesteaded 160 acres. They built that adobe structure after Lord Duppa sold his property. Also on another note Lord Duppa named Phoenix!

Yes, I knew of those places. The first cemetery, I believe, was the Williams cemetery. When I was kid, we lived at 46 Street and Melvin. The cemetery had many stones and more wooden crosses. I wish I had taken photos. Of course, I was a kid of maybe 12 and never thought jackasses would trash a cemetery. But they sure did. So sad. Swilling was an interesting character. Live all over AZ. Gillette is probably all gone now, I know he lived there. Several buildings left when I was there. No roofs, of course. That way, there is no tax due as I understand. I do like your videos.

Hello hello! Sorry it has been so long since I've visited your channel - I'm trying to be a better supporter and get back to the YT community. Life has been so busy since I started my own business, but I want to carve out time for YT as well! Your channel is doing fantastic, and I know it is because you put your nose to the grindstone. Well done! Your vlogging style has matured so nicely - you look super professional! So fun to watch!

The ditch does not exist anymore. The Grand canal is parallel and a mile or so to the east. It crossed van buren around 31st st, then northeast through St Marks, under Maricopa county hospital and then the ditch headed west. Some streets like Villa and Taylor may have been aligned with the ditch.

Yay. Helpful info. I come to Phoenix every 3-4 years and concentrate on different ruins. I plan on visiting Hohokam stuff this spring. Now this house is on my list. I presume it’s the building in the Y intersection with a blue tarp covering.
