I lived in Bulolo in the 1970s and swam in the Watut River many times, the local people the Kuka Kuka were feared by many other people in the surrounding valleys including Bulolo. The mining companies would be wise to tread gently here after what the people on Bougainville did when their river was destroyed, villages destroyed and reefs at the mouth of the river also destroyed. I also worked at Loloho 2 on Bougainville for Bougainville Copper and seen what damaged was done, not only to the river but throughout the whole area, the destruction of the Bulolo River in the 1930s-1960 is still evident today.

Similar situation in Tembagapura in West Papua. Freeport mine has also lives of local tribes living in the area. Tailings from the Freeport mine has destroyed the river system.

I was going to say "Mining companies should hang their heads in shame" But it seems that they HAVE no shame! Environmental destruction can be offset relatively easily, however, it costs money and this film demonstrates that when people are balanced against profits, the people will always lose. Somebody in govrnment is doubtless getting kickbacks as the mining companies have figured this is cheaper than putting in measures to cut back on pollution or work on methods to not devastate the lives of local Papuans. Lessons from previous mining in the country just haven't been learned and/or the companies have accepted that destroying the local nature is an acceptable price to pay for the amount of gold and silver that they are puiling out of these mines.

Companies can use the waste rock in simple on-site construction, such as filling gaps and rebuilding mining land in a way that prevents soil erosion.

Too much mine and still less development. Where is all the resources go?.. people are still living on their local houses for many years now.. Government should prepare a better environmental conservation planning for all this mining problems... Government should stop all illegal mining and oil companies operating in the country.

Australian mining don’t care about the people, rise up and shut the mine like they did in Boganville ,

People in need of development made a trade-off between their land for what they thought was development. What now?😢😢

The Watut River is dirty 95% in a year before mining in Hidden Valley Mine. Your video is biased. These people are from Lower Watut.

This is what happened in Bougainville..n we all know what happened ove there. Sounds to me like no one learnt anything from that. I lived in the Buin area and witnessed the damage it did to the rivers n the livelihood of the locals. There has to be a better way to do this..

Better locals close down those mining projects and have other Agricultural opportunities. Don't kiss down to our Government and Investors for quick cash overight in exchange for mining It is very destructive to our environment and people as well.
