Really excited for this video series, I have a gray fox I plan on making a wall hanger, and I'd love to make a hooped beaver like you have.

That sounds awesome. I’ve never caught any gray fox, but I would love to catch one, and tan him. The beaver are about the hardest fur animal that I tan. I only do them because I love the hooped beaver at the end. The third part of this series is hooping some of these beavers. Thanks for checking it out!

I recommend to test the PH of the salt water/pickle it should between 1.5 and 2 if you keep the PH at that level you can feel safe to keep the hides in the pickel till the hide has swelled plump. Can stay in the pickel for 2 weeks if needed if and remember the Ph must be kept between 1.5 &2

Great tip! I usually test the PH when I’m using an alumn tan, but great advice for sure.

Very nice easy way to tan your fur. Hope all learn from your video. I’ve tanned fur since I was 16 years old. Now 55. On occasion I tan a few items for myself. I mostly do deer heads for others and tan them myself. Well done. JC.
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent57902 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome! We could all learn a trick or two from you. I sell most of my fur raw. I’ve been tanning my stuff for about 15 years or so, and I try to learn something new every year. Thanks for watching
@tomkatoutdoor63742 жыл бұрын
That pink area is blood. I learned years ago. Soon as your fur is in hand. Get salt on it and pull the blood out of it. Blood dies as the animal dies. And the blood causes a bacteria that the fur will fall out. Salt removes the blood that causes skin slip. You probably already know this. But if someone reads this give a thumbs up. To see you have learned something from mr Cooley. (JC)

Oh forgot to tell you. I keep all yotes. Clean. Scrap. Wash. Stretch. Even if they have a bad spot Inbetween shoulders. I never sell these. Might get a $5 out of them. So what I do is this. Re dehydrated the hide in salt water. Then tan. After it’s tanned and washed. I put it on the stretcher with skin out. But also rotate the hide 1/2 way and pull over. So the middle of the back and center of both front legs and let dry. On occasions pulling hide over days. Then when your done you got the sides of the yote that looks very nice Because most yotes are rubbed just in the middle of the back. You can use these hides for just about anything. Or give them away. Kids are always coming in with there dads to pick up deer heads. Slip them half a coyote hide. And there eyes light right up. I’ve bought coyote faces and give them away and they enjoy them too.

I've always pickled mine with citric acid and salt. Your method seems faster and cheaper for sure just curious if the hide puffs for the final thinning good video keep it up.

Sounds like you’ve already watched part 2 of this series, and it isn’t even out yet hahaha. I do go into a little detail of pickling the hide on the second video, but for making wall hangers I don’t pickle them, or thin the hide. Great point!

I’m finding out how thin fox hide is, it’s like tissue paper! I catch a few of them every year, I try and let them go if I can but if they’re in a snare I keep them, I figure they’re worth more out there eating mice or the neighbors damn tomcats 🤬🤣
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent57902 жыл бұрын
I do the same thing when I catch them. We have a small population here, and I would like to see them be sustained before I target them. I did release one from a snare about 12 years ago. She was caught on the back leg, and tail. She survived for quite a few years at the local gravel pit. The Forman of the pit said he seen her up to 5 years later. He could tell because she had a messed up tail from the snare.

With the lousy cost in beaver skins now, I decided to get back into trapping them just so I can make pouches, either hunting or small medicine pouches out of them. I can make more selling them that way then trying to sell the whole skins. Thanks for this video.

Hey glad to hear from you in Sweden! Yes definitely freeze the hide. It will be fine for awhile. If you wait too long it can get freezer burnt, but 6 months it will be fine.

Is it possiable to over flesh?
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent57902 жыл бұрын
Good question. It definitely is possible, if you take too much off you will expose the hair follicles, and then the hair falls out. If you are on a thick part of the hide (back of the neck, or hips) you can definitely thin it down some without exposing the follicles.
