The legend of the Medusa involve needing to look at her with the naked eye for petrification to work (Looking with mirrors doesn't work). Ethos Medusa seems to act similarly only she can control it and seems to require eye contact. Finn was most likely to be immune because of the crown and ethos robotic eye or cybernetic part my counteract or reduce the petrification.
