I have a doubt... I have gone through two studies in Communication Research, wherein Hierarchical Cluster Analysis was used to find out media frames. They have defined variables and binary variables are computed in SPSS. They have put heterogeneity measures in the studies.. What are these heterogeneity measures? Should we define the dissimilarity measures between cases beforehand in order to find out cluster solution?

Another beginner here. As far as I understand, you only need to have outliers removed, standardized scales (for example answers between -1 to 1 only) in order to perform hierarchical clustering
