It's so crazy that a $500 product is an upgrade to something that was around $1200. Hifiman is an incredible brand just for dropping the price when they easily could have called this the HEX3 and charged more.

Great review!! Would love to see your take on the Hifiman Ananda and compare them to this one. They are 200 dollars more expensive and some say they are not necessarily better than the XS.

It looks like you have the new Macbook pro. I have the same one and the jack can supposedly power 150 ohm. It would have been useful to see your comparison of sounds between with, and without the DAC.

Honestly, I'm not sure my ears would catch something that could be a very subtle difference, but that is a good idea. With higher-end units, I generally just automatically grab one of my DAC/Amp units to ensure I have the best possible signal for the audition process.

Do you use the xbass feature and gain on the hipdac when listening to these? How far did you have to turn the volume up to drive them?

I'm always seeking a flat response so tend not to use bass enhancement for most day-to-day listening. I found the XS did fine without it.

My understanding is that stealth magnets are really only effective in the high treble area, around 12 khz and up, so it may lead to a more "airy" sound. Shrug.
