@X_Woods5 күн бұрын
Probably. They didn't measure the final product (or at least didn't share the results), so we don't really have any basis to know if the claim has even the slightest validity. Half a gallon of 99% crude fuel, and a gallon of say 30%(?) is no where near the efficiency that threatens the current processes. Even if this was 51% crude fuel, I don't believe that'd convince most plants to pivot to new processes, because it still adds a whole new step to separate the fuel from the impurities which would likely cost more than the 2% advantage @ scale. Not saying I don't hope he gets there... That said, I don't think someone will find a more efficient process by trying to make a more efficient process. I would hope they pivot harder to solving plastics recycling, and discover a direct application to plastic wastes, rather than forcing the product to be something it wasn't ever meant to be. Chainsaws were made as a medical device. MRI were a by-product of reading our universe's history. Revolutionary products are almost never what they were intended to be. Necessity is the mother of invention, but curiosity is the father of ingenuity.

Very cool the concept is great as we have way too much plastic and no way to get rid of it effectively. Problem is this process is using tons of energy from the grid which as I understand is at least 75% run by fossil fuels to produce a fossil fuel that will run a vehicle at maybe 40-50% thermal efficiency at best. Have you considered using alternative energy sources? Ive been working on doing something similar using concentrated solar reflectors to create a similar effect.
@wilurbean2 күн бұрын
His process makes a toxic fuel that's more toxic when burned, and it takes 30kWh of electricity to make 1kWh of unusable toxic fuel by his own reports. The "carbon", "fuel" and "gas" he's making are all extremely toxic and carcinogenic and likely mutagenic of there's anything like benzene or hydrazine in there. They're is no issue with storing used plastic indefinitely. Dig a big hole, line with cement, fill with plastic, and it will stay there for millenia indefinite.

Everywhere I've googled says a minimal of 300c and a maximum of 900c is pyrolysis. Took 5 seconds Straight from Google "plastic pyrolysis temperature" - A "too low" temperature for plastic pyrolysis would generally be considered anything significantly below 400°C, as this range is where the optimal breakdown of plastic into usable liquid products occurs; at very low temperatures, the plastic might not decompose adequately, resulting in a high yield of heavy, viscous oils with limited value. Key points about plastic pyrolysis temperature: Ideal range: Most plastic pyrolysis processes operate between 400°C and 500°C to achieve a good balance of liquid fuel yield and quality. Low temperature effects: If the temperature is too low, the pyrolysis process will produce a higher proportion of heavy, unrefined oils, potentially requiring further processing to be useful. High temperature effects: Conversely, very high temperatures can lead to excessive gas production, reducing the liquid fuel yield and potentially creating unwanted byproducts

I mean, the things people are ignoring is that this is this kid just practicing craft, getting familiar, and refining his skills and knowledge for small-scale and personal use cases. That said thats not a bad foundation to do more. Furthermore, refining plastic may be energy inefficient, but thats were things like nuclear come into play. All energy isnt the same Its form, and transmutability are wildly different, and that effects its use cases. Also, the idea that we have a shortage of energy.... It doesnt matter if this is energy inefficient, as long as the energy thats being used was energy that is easy to use for this but hard to use for anything else, and creates a product which is easy to transport and use in many use cases. If you were to scale this up, and feed it by some abundant energy source(nuclear, waste fuel, geothermal) you could run a large scale reaction that while energy inefficient leverages abundant energy in specific context to produce something that can be used as energy in a variety of methods and transported as needed conveniently(not to mention turning what otherwise would have been pollution into productive energy) Its not to say this is a perfect finished process, but theres also lots of room to take this further and make it actually useful and functional at scale

the idea of sorting this trash on a large scale and the transportation is really what would make this non viable. not to mention a reactor like this puts off fairly toxic gases that are about as bad as the plastics sitting in the environment. So it really loses out on three separate fronts sadly between extra manpower in sorting, highly inefficient energy conversion and environmental impact.
@1987FX162 күн бұрын
If it was a viable option it would be happening. But the pyrolysis process puts off toxic chemicals into the air. It is less chemicals than just burning the plastic, but it still off gasses into the environment. There are atoms called carbon and there are atoms called hydrogen. They dont need to be joined together, but when they do, carbon and hydrogen, without any other atoms, they are called hydrocarbons. So these molecules will just float around in the liquid. There are many ways to join them together, which affects how liquid they are, and other things too. Some are straight, some branching, some in a circle. Usually they are categorised by the number of carbons in that molecule because it affects the characteristics the most. A hydrocarbon with one carbon is methane, three carbon is propane, 4 carbon is butane. As the number of carbons go up they get thicker and less like a vapor and becomes more like an oil. Thats where you get a range of molecules that are deemed gasoline and some diesel, etc. Plastics are made of even longer chains of carbon. They stop being like an oil and become solid. But inside plastics its also many carbons and hydrogens all joined in one big piece. Thats why they are solid. Because they have a high number of atoms joined in every single molecule. The process this guy does will sort of randomly break apart the plastics into smaller chunks of different lengths. Some of them fall under the category of gasoline, some diesel, etc. and some would be broken back up into ingredients to make plastics too. So after this crude mixture of stuff, he needs to separate everything out. Sort of like how they make strong drinks. A weak alcohol can be boiled to bring out more of the alcohol rather than the water and you collect only the alcohol but leave most of the water behind. So in essence you can select what things you want and leave behind stuff you dont want. This allows him to make gasoline and diesel from that crude mixture.
@de05095 күн бұрын
So yes. To answer the question, he can. But this goop of stuff needs to be run in the distiller first before you can put it into a bike. Gotta refine the stuff first, then its ok.

Why not set up site glass on stoarage tank so you can see how much your makeing then get what ever psi valve you need and some braided hose and drain it into barrels so you don’t make a mess and also you could have a small drain line on back underbelly of tank to allow the water to flow out into a storage tank that catches your water I work facilities in oilfield and you could set it up pretty easily and I could even send you design
