I've used a CB radio in my car for over a year now, and never have I ever heard anyone using lingo typically associated with hams. But, since anyone can transmit on the CB band as long as they stay at the legal power limit, you could be hearing some of your ham buddies talking back and forth! Also, CQ DX means calling all distant stations, not necessarily another country. Over and out from a CB operator with no amateur license. ;)

Since when is an "export radio" top of the line? Top of the line is the $13000 Icom IC-7800. It would be interesting to see a comparison between entry level HF rigs from Yaesu, Icom, and Kenwood; and a higher end "export radio". I wouldn't be surprised if the HF ham rigs would win. There is a reason why "export radios" are not typically purchased by licensed hams.

I know that when you spend that much on a radio you want to see it do 300 or better. I would too. But the truth is is that the person on the other end is not going to *hear* the difference. You would have to double your power for them to see a 1/2 S unit increase. You would have to quadruple your power for them to see one whole S unit difference. The shop that sold you the radio may have also dialed you back to save the finals. Considering that you're hardly affecting the S0 unit reading on the other end that's probably something in your favor. Just a thought.
@kc86536 жыл бұрын
The radio doesnt do 300 watts not even close. Unless some other work has been done. Should only do a little over 200 after tune up. Dead key should be set 40 to 60 watts...

Ham licensing in the US is at an all time high. So the hobby isn't on it's death bed yet. Really, if someone is too dumb or lazy to pass a ham license test, then perhaps they shouldn't be on the ham bands. It's not that difficult to to pass the test. On one of the local repeaters I recently chatted with a 5th grader who recently got his license. If a kid can do it, it's not that hard. Perhaps they should have. "Are you smarter than a 5th grader, ham radio edition". LOL
@purplemutantas11 жыл бұрын
Thankfully I haven't run into very many assholes on ham. I have only been licensed since November of 2012, but so far I have been having tons of fun. Since I only have a technician license, my HF options are limited. So the only HF I have been working is 10 meters. But I have had quite a bit of fun doing PSK31. It's amazing what 5 watts will do with PSK31 when 10 meters is open. I have managed multiple contacts over 5000 miles away.

By the way "CQ DX" means "calling anyone in another country". A few hundred miles isn't DX, a few THOUSAND miles is. I have made 10 meter contacts over 5 thousand miles away using only 5 watts. From the bay area in CA I have made contacts with, Canada, Chile, Brazil, Japan, Australia, and Puerto Rico. What's up with CBers using ham radio lingo? You don't hear people on the ham bands saying "10-4" and "what's your 20". 73 from a licensed amateur radio operator.

It's not so much mad as annoyed. One of main issues with this video is the inappropriate use of the term "CQ DX". It's used when you want to call someone in another country. If you are going to use special terminology, use it correctly. If someone is calling "CQ DX" you aren't supposed to respond if you are in the same country. You are right, ham isn't an exclusive club. It's open to anyone who can pay the fee and pass the license test.

That's unfortunate. The people at my club are really nice. Most of the hams I have encountered in person or on the air have been nice people. Unfortunately there are jerks everywhere, including ham radio. I wasn't assuming you were too lazy to take the test. It was a general statement. I still believe that the current ham licensing system is a decent/good system. There are only a few minor changes I would make. Like allowing technicians full privileges on 10 meters.

The ICOM IC-718 can me modified to operate on 11 meters. But out of the box none of those radios will work on 11 meters. Since it as to be FCC approved for 11 meter use. So even an "export radio" has to be modded to work on 11 meters. If I had any interest in operating illegally on 11 meters, I would chose an Icom over an "export radio" any day.

300 Watt Deadkey? hahahaha POP!
@timothyparryjropen6 жыл бұрын
he needs to go back to class, but he is getting out there(likely due to his elevation). It's probably more like a 5 watt dead key with a 300 watt amp. the PEP of the amp is 300 watts, but since the radio is driving the amp his PEP may "swing" up to 350, although on AM I highly doubt that because AM splits the RF between the two sidebands plus has a carrier in the middle, some RF power does get lost in Amplitude Modulation because of that. If he ran sideband all of the RF energy would go into one sideband and thus no RF energy would be lost because of that split like AM has. He's probably only getting at most 150 watts PEP on AM because of the lost energy, but thinks he's getting 300+ because he read that his amp can do so without understanding the mechanics behind RF and CB in general.
@kc86536 жыл бұрын
@@timothyparryjropen I have one it's not doing 300. Maybe 225 pep max. But I didnt have mine tune to blow up a week after I bought it.
@timothyparryjropen6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree, just because it says it can do that on paper, doesn't mean it really will output that much. Also, there is something called a duty cycle which a transceiver can only run so many watts for a certain period of time and then the transceiver will start to get hot and run less watts and tear up the components inside the transceiver as well no matter the mode used(AM,FM,SSB). In AM/FM you want your dead key to be lower because you don't want to overdrive the signal too much or you will get signal deviation and channel splatter(someone hearing you distorted on another channel) the more you output(or drive the linear with the rig) and you can destroy the output of either/or if you run them too hard for a long time. Power is not the entire story, if one wants to be heard it would be better to increase your modulation in a transceiver to 125%-150% because then you will be "loud" without trashing the audio quality of your signal because of signal over deviation and possibly destroying your equipment, either with a powered microphone or turning up the modulation potentiometer on a transceiver. People will think you have more power because it's the "cool" thing now, but actually it will save your equipment and you will get heard, you will lose watts but be louder.
@justanotherguy38506 жыл бұрын
@@timothyparryjropen :: agreed for the most part except you really don't want to exceed 125% modulation. When you get upwards to 150% modulation you're well into distortion. You WILL splatter on the adjacent channels and your neighbors won't be happy. I know it's part of CB radio but you can do your best to make it a better experience by being a better operator. Distortion means and expanded bandwidth of your audio instead of narrowing it on frequency. Distortion actually makes it harder to copy on the other end. If you were ever given an opportunity to visit an AM broadcast station, or even FM for that matter, you would see that they regularly drive for 0dB + 10. There are better ways of doing it such as using a compressor / limiter in-line with the microphone that will actually take and compress your audio into an envelope that will then output 100% audio at all times. On amateur radio it's called a speech processor and some are better than others. But you may purchase one affordably from Behringer for example or dbx for under $200. THAT will give you the most bang for your buck. You may go one better and add a gate. The gate acts like a muting circuit so that when there is a lapse in your talking it clips it in a polite way so that you still don't hear a slow steady rush as your microphone tries to pick up the background noise of perhaps the TV as it tries to keep the audio level at a high peak. As you speak when properly tuned the gate will open and your audio from the microphone will go through and then close when you take a breath between statements. Unless you're a ratchet jaw like me. Then you work the hell out of that bastard! Amateur radio operators like to use the W2IHY products. They are quick and easy to add. In fact, you can even add a much higher quality microphone if you are really really serious about getting the best sound out of your rig, even a CB radio. You don't want distortion. You want audio punch. You don't want Echo and sound effects like many see beers think are cool to add. What you want is a commanding sound that when you key down they hear you and you da man! www.w2ihy.com/ At one time in my life I was an audio technician and these were the tools of our trade.
