Great sounding systems, but, alas.. only a dream for the average man. Don't have the money or space for such extravagance, however... over many years in this 'circuit' of buying and selling mostly used equipment,\ I managed to end up with a great sounding setup that is giving me many hours of pleasure. One should never forget that it is the music that ''connects'' with us, not the equipment. Thanks for making the effort to present to us these exotic systems, they do sound great even through KZbin and the little Class D amplifier attached to my computer.

'Audiophile' demo CD's are always crisp sparse recordings that are always just going to sound great. This why when you demo speakers it should be with music you actually listen to rather than some over engineered recording the saleman puts on. 'oh i can her the fingers on the strings', well of course you can, it's been selected precisely because you can.
@ryankramer2 жыл бұрын
You need both. Because, let's face it, a lot of our favorite music might not have been produced/mastered very well. Even variations from one release to another for the same album can happen. Muse has albums that sound better on vinyl than disc because the master used had more dynamic range. So it's not all "Oh I can hear her fingers" it's also "can these speakers shine with good AND bad recordings?"

Ugh I should learn how to edit my comments instead of adding my own followup. Anyway there are lots of such moments, I stopped keeping track. A bit unacceptable, really, "Audiophile Music". Another Naked Emperor moment from Overpriced Audio? Or maybe it's just overpriced garbage making that noise. But I think at least one of those systems should sound OK even though they are all obviously working hard at being overpriced. So it must be your video.

As someone just learning about higher-end audio (by no means an audiophile) but I could not understand what had happened to music over the past 20ish year. The only explanation I could describe was that it was flat. I stopped in at a local higher-end retailer and I was ever educated. I did not know anything about the "loudness war" and how audio mixing has really changed "dynamic range" yet another term that I was introduced to. I was completely blown away by how a decent set of speakers, driven with good quality power, and a non-compressed file could sound like. I've found a new passion; ordered a NAD amp, Focal speakers, can't wait for the install and to continue to explore music as it was intended to be.
@howardgoldberg53182 жыл бұрын
Best choice was the focal speakers. Try their headphones too. Closed back pro. You are absorbed in the sound

You could have a new 20k sound system and some older tube amplifiers will make them sound flat It’s all subjective and placement of speakers is a huge issue I just use 2 Ads speaker on a 1963 HH Scott 20x2 watt tube amp and it is unbelievable detailed compared to my very expensive New Marantz it’s night and day for me

There have been many good comments and I'll summarize a few that I agree with and add my own little bit. My work involves lots of live sound of a variety of genres. I don't consider myself an audiophile and, while we have some good recording/monitoring systems in various venues at my work, I certainly don't have an "audiophile" caliber system at home. But, I do know a bit about music, computers, A/D conversion, bit rates, compression, FFMpeg, etc. Yes, there are issues with noise and dropouts in this video but there are still many good things here and it would be nice if an updated audio track without these annoyances could be posted. The sample rates and bit depth that KZbin supports are not true HQ or HD or whatever other name you like to assign to higher quality recordings but this video using the Opus Codec (at 48KHz x 32 bit) is way better than the typical Spotify, iTunes, and Amazon, etc. online sources and their optimized for streaming content and it's also better than many KZbin videos. It would be nice if KZbin supported FLAC or another lossless codec but, since more people listen to music on KZbin than just about any other service, i don't fault the poster for posting this here using the best audio quality that KZbin supports. The use of the term "HQ sound" IS a bit much but, since there's no trademark on that term, it is what it is. For those who have experience, please recommend some entry level DACs, headphones, speakers, amps etc that might help those of us with low/modest means to find a better listening experinece. Similarly, where do you get your higher quality content? The comments about Michael Jackson etc are extremely helpful to those who are just getting into this. Don't like MJ? Share something about recordings that you do like. Do you like High Definition on iTunes or Amazon? Let us know or steer us somewhere you like better. Finally, my own comments on the first piece in this video, a cover of Sting's "Fragile" by Primrose Path. Overall I definitely like Sting's version better just because, well, it's Sting, he wrote it and it would be difficult for anyone to equal or surpass his performance and interpretation of this piece because he's just an amazing writer and performer. It's been one of my favorite Sting pieces since I purchased the CD over 30 years ago. I especially like his voice and the tempo that he set better than the much slower pace of the Primrose Path cover presented here. But there are many things I like about the Primrose Path version, especially as a piece to demo an audio system. The Sting recording has more of a "produced" feel and the use of reverb sort of muddles things more than I like. The Primrose Path version has a more acoustic feel, even though the harp is electronic vs. Sting's acoustic guitar. I like the vocalist's voice and interpretation and I think the recording engineer(s) did a very good job with the mic of capturing his voice as well as the other instruments. I also like how I can place the instruments left to right and front to back in the Primrose Path version, especially when listening on speakers. On headphones however, everything in this piece sounds to me like it's spread left to right in the middle of my head so I don't think there was much room ambience in the original recording or added in post production. I would encourage any of you who listen primarily on headphones to try to find even a modest room/speaker environment, put yourself right in the best spot in the room, close your eyes, and listen to this piece trying to place the various objects in space. I hear the voice just right of center, the harp spread across the whole space but just left of center with the drums/percussion behind. Overall, I like it very much and it's easy to see why the poster put this piece first in the set. It may not tax every aspect of your audiophile system, but I still think it's a great piece to listen to and have probably listened to it 40 or 50 times since I found this. It sounds terrible on the system in my car but, it sounds pretty good to me just about everywhere I've listened.

One observation, all these tracks showcase natural instruments recorded from microphones and mixed to have pleasing tonal qualities which are easily reproducible by nice speakers, but certainly don’t require an audiophile grade system. A fantastic recording studio and engineer can produce this “audiophile grade” recording, but let’s not confuse that with “audiophile grade speakers”. I quote that because defining that empirically is not possible in a YT comment. I feel that it’s probably more difficult for a system to reproduce dynamic and artificial sounds that are conceived in a pure digital form. In this scenario the burden of reproducing a purely digital source with such huge dynamic range and bandwidth is placed upon the speakers which stress their design to reproduce a sound which may not even be possible in air. The demands that heavy bass and detailed treble while also preserving the delicate midrange is somewhat more difficult in my opinion. Beautiful music none-the-less.

You like a great sounding system, most people do, that doesn't necessarily mean you need a diagnosis. Besides, 'audiophile' isn't a term you want to embrace because it's shorthand for 'more money than sense' and before you know it you'll be buying $500 cables that are exactly the same as $20 cables.....except they're 'audiophile' cables :)

The ridiculousness of Hi-End Audio and the mad people that try to reach the unobtainable. They all must sound incredible but over KZbin and our PC how could we know? I guess there are billionaires for whom the cost of these systems is immaterial and who have the room for them. I've had this battle with audio improvements for over 50 years and have ended up with a nice system, but my ears are so old now I'd never hear the difference these elaborate systems make over my own. In the end it's a losing battle as all of these systems have compromises in reproducing real life sound, no matter how much you pay.
