I can't agree with Steve any more, those wall hung water heaters/boilers aren't worth the extra money. People don't know they need to be cleaned and flushed every year, they just get sold on the promise of endless hot water or "high efficiency". Great video Steve thank you.

I bought a house with a wall hung , on demand water heater, its been flawless and ill never go back to a tank heater, if this one dies, ill put another one in, of course i service it every year when i change my hvac filters so idk, i dont really think it's as efficient as they claim, but whatever, it works and uses ¼ of the space

I put the Biasi B10 CI boiler in 12 years ago with Riello OIl Burner. Added the flue damper and outdoor reset, and the only component other than the annual burner service I had to change was one of the ODR pipe sensors. Way more efficient than the Utica Starfire it replaced, not excessively expensive, and easy to maintain. From a service perspective, you want more customers to put in these wall hung units, but from the homeowner perspective, I wouldn't want one. Maybe you save 5-10% on fuel, but between upfront cost and TCO, they are never favorable to the owner.

Not junk if they're properly maintained and flushed regularly. Problem is homeowners can't be bothered, don't know how or don't want to pay a guy to do a yearly flushing and then they wonder why they have no heat in the middle of winter when the unit is only a few years old. Not like the old stuff where you can install it and then leave it for 15 years until one day it fails. The new stuff needs more TLC but is definitely worth it if they're properly maintained.

I think that expansion tank may be undersized that might be causing an issue with the feed valve causing it to get stuck. Looks like a ~2 Gallon expansion tank with a 100 Gal boiler & a lot of loops. If this is the second circ. pump that has failed, perhaps the pumps are undersized.

After watching many of these hot water boiler repair videos, I’ll stick with my gas fired low pressure steam system. The only electric needed, in the whole system is the feed water and you can do that by hand, no pumps, no valves, it just runs. If you’ve got gas, you got heat.

It has a very sensitive (and problematic needs to be cleaned often) low water cut off, I think you will be back sooner or later. Those Weil Mclain thermistors go all the time. Same thing, reset it it and it will work again a few day or weeks.. Reset it again and it will work again for another short time.. Then it finally goes. I replace a lot of them on the Ultras. Now I just do it on 1st fail. They come in pairs in and out. Also one on the flue. There are a few different versions for the ultra series. From personal experience with those Ultras, I would do all three if you do go back.

100% correct on the HE systems. Junk. Our church has had nothing but issues and brand does not seem to matter. We have replaced a 6 year old Triangle Tube and we are about to replace 4 Lochinvar free standing units tied together for redundancy but 3 of them failed in less than two years. I have learned more about HE boilers than I care to know. First, do not install with any old radiators etc. Second, always install a filter feeder system. Third, become a plumber and be on standby to deal with these finaky pieces of shit or just install a regular efficiency boiler and in the long run you will spend the same amount of money. More money on fuel but less cost on repairs. Don't become the R&D department for these manufacturers.

They do not like cold or cooler water to return to the boiler. I see people install them where an old cast boiler was for thirty years. They need to be piped like shown here with a primary loop fed to secondary piping so warm or hot water consistently feeds back to the unit. I’m not a fan of these at all, but if piped like a standard boiler you are guaranteed to have issues.

That Weil Mclain Ultra needs a good cleaning. I service those quite a bit. They do suck. I would never put one in my house. MA gives big rebates on them and that's why people install them. A full service is cleaning the electrodes, take the heat exchanger apart. Clean and flush, replace all gaskets etc. I charge around $900 to do it. You want the high efficiency crap, well pay the big bucks for a service. If you need new electrodes or flame sensors, that's extra.

HE systems are for people who have money and don't like messing with maintenance and willing to pay for it. That is good though because that is only way that future and better systems will come about. Kind of like electric cars. Some people will complain that you don't get 400 miles out of a charge and you can't charge it in 5 min's. Because of early adopters they will get those numbers sooner rather than later. Same thing with electric cars, early adopters are willing to pay and work around limitations. I know people like their comfort zones. I have them also! Mine usually involve sports though. Give me Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and 70's football.
