This is exactly like what a professor taught us in a non-standard non-immersive German reading course that assumed we could all already speak English about 30 years ago. At the time, we were told not to tell the university he was telling us this information. Thank you.

This is indeed a very enlightening talk, however, I do have to point out that English does not come from German - they share the same ancestor. The original language is called proto-Germanic.
