In steep country 99% of the time I am far more concerned about falling with a loaded rifle than I am about a bear! But in that specific scenario, you're right, I should've had one in the pipe.

We hunt because that is what humans are meant to do, and its a healthy lifestyle. Bear meat is delicious. He was not alone. To each their own, but having one in the chamber while traversing through difficult terrain can be very dangerous.

@@PNWild I didnt ask why people hunt, I got that part. Why hunt bear alone without one in the chamber? He said the bear popped up very near him and he didnt get the shot off because he had to chamber the round and messed that up. If the bear charged the rifle would only be a club at best.
