I'm a new player to the game, so what is a port strategy? Why is it inefficient?
@DyLightedCatan5 жыл бұрын
@Some noob 646 great question. A ‘port strategy’ is where you concentrate on a single resource (example: sheep) and you build your second settlement near the sheep port so you can 2:1 (sheep) for any resource you want. In theory, this should make you ‘flexible’ as you can make any resource you want for 2 (sheep). The issue with this strategy is that you need 2 sheep for any resource. This makes it so you need twice the amount of production just to catch up because you are doing a 2:1 every time compared to someone who diversifies their resources so they don’t need a port as badly.
@Mousepotato85 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad I found these videos, as they have a lot of very useful information! I agree with most of your commentary, but here are a few things I disagree with. Settlement placement: I actually think orange placed its first road correctly. However, its second settlement should go on the 6-3-11 with 11 wood, aiming for the 4 ore+11 wood as its third settlement. Then it can expand toward the left side of the board using its solid clay/wood numbers. Green, on the other hand, should aim both its roads toward the ports. It absolutely needs the wood port so it can go for its best strategy, which is spamming dev cards for wheat+sheep+2 wood. 4-card development cards are not very inefficient, and green has great numbers on all of those resources, so it would have excellent chances to win the game without any collusion. Right after you settle on the 3-1 port, you trade 3 ore for 1 wheat and buy a third knight. You should instead trade 6 ore for 1 wheat + 1 clay and build another settlement on the 6-11-12. You'll have plenty of time to get the third knight for largest army later. Toward the end of the game, you suggest that you should have offered a trade to green that would let you win the game. This is why I won't trade with players who have 8pts or more unless it lets me win the game. Green might have been thinking that way, so this wasn't necessarily a missed opportunity. Good job spotting the win that you did have; I might've missed it since I was still thinking about cities and longest road.
@DyLightedCatan5 жыл бұрын
Good thoughts! Thanks for analyzing my gameplay. Here are some of my thoughts. About Orange's road, I still think a safer play would to place your road towards the 3:1 port. The reasoning behind this is because their first spot doesn't have wheat, and more wood is always pretty good to fit the 1:1 wood/brick ratio. The 7 production points, a 3:1 port, and getting more wheat is a really great deal. On the other hand, pointing the road inwards can only secure a race for a mediocre 4/5/11 with more brick/sheep that is unnecessary. In addition, Orange's first placement as 3rd position means that they still have to wait for 4th position to place. This means there is still uncertainty where they will place. The safer option that yields a greater benefit to me is the 9/10. I like the thoughts with Orange taking the 6/3/11. However, the weakness is low wheat. If you watched my other videos, you should understand the importance of obtaining an adequate wheat source. If I were to place there, my first priorities would be to build on the 10/9 3:1 port for more wheat, and then build towards the 4ore/11 brick port. Remember, "no wheat = defeat." "No ore? You're done for. (This rule is a bit more flexible)" About green, yea I thought his road placement was terrible. I think he could've won the game easily if he didn't have such a rocky start. At 11:10, the reason why I bought a development card was because I wanted to invest my resources into something that doesn't give me an immediate victory point. This gives me a much better low profile rather than getting 2 points in a single turn which sort of lets everyone know I'm starting to ramp up. I find with lower level players, it's a lot more about sneaking around. I thought these players weren't super high quality. For strong players, this doesn't apply as much as they can tell pretty quickly you're planning next. About the trade I missed, perhaps the right move would've been to not move the robber and then try do the trade so I'm at 6 points which makes me look like a nonthreat. Perhaps you're right with green not taking my deal, but green was thirsty for ore to city up so I think trying to offer it couldn't have hurt.
@Mousepotato85 жыл бұрын
@@DyLightedCatan Thanks for your response. I just watched the rest of your videos--they are very good, and I'm looking forward to seeing more! I think it's really close between the 2 possible road placements for orange. I actually thought heading towards the middle would be safer, because green might try to cut off my road toward the port, or someone might decide to place their second settlement on top of the 9-10 port. I also want to head toward the middle since I am going for longest road, so I need lots of room to expand. It's true it comes with low wheat numbers but I have the clay port and tons of sheep so in the worst case I could trade 4-for-1 sheep for wheat. Maybe I should try to make it less obvious when I am winning. I usually just assume that my opponents will rob from me no matter what (they often do) and plan accordingly.
@DyLightedCatan5 жыл бұрын
@@Mousepotato8 If green is smart, then they wouldn't cut you off with the free road from placing 2nd on the 6/9/2. Whenever you play a port strategy, your first priority is to get to a port no matter what. Any other goal is delaying your game and stalling your ability to ramp up. With that said, there are bad players so I think the fear of getting cut off is valid. Doing 4:1 sheep for wheat is extremely inefficient. I believe it would be very hard to win like that. About heading towards the center for longest road, that does make sense. I am more of a conservative player so I dislike doing that, but should probably consider options like that more. Going to do my best to upload a video this weekend. Hope you enjoy!

Yea that was a mistake. I just thought hitting all 3 people was better than hitting 1, but the other 2 players were "dead" players. So I agree with you that later in the game I should've been placing the robber on the 6 wood instead of the 9 wood.

@davidjosso53725 жыл бұрын
To what ends do you think this stragety translates to cities and knights? As in the three tips you gave at the end
@DyLightedCatan5 жыл бұрын
1) Ports are still good! In fact I believe having a port is almost a requirement to win. However, that doesn't mean to sacrifice other potential spots just to go all in on a port (5 tiles of sheep with a sheep port). It's been mathematically proven this is inefficient (and it just sort of makes sense if you think about it) 2) You can't do a Cities and Knights strategy without wheat. Don't even try. In fact it's extremely difficult to win without wheat, hence the saying "No wheat = defeat". 3) Don't race unnecessarily. This one is probably the biggest one. As the cities and knight player, you can't waste a single road. Every road is super valuable. You build your settlements not usually for production, but rather for a port/VP's. To ensure not getting cut off, point towards the coast/desert to guarantee a 3rd settlement. Absolutely never commit to a race, unless you can win it before it even started. (In this case, I had a road building but if I didn't I wouldn't even have tried to go for the race.) *Edit: oops. I thought you mean playing a cities and knights game in the base game. Not the expansion.

The numbers have little dots on them, so an 8 has 5 dots or points, an 11 has 2 points, etcetera. Numbers with more points get rolled more often, so having a village with 13 adjacent points will get you tons of resources.
@illegitimate04 жыл бұрын
To be slightly more clear than the other comment, the points refer to the probability of that number being rolled. An 8 has 5 points, and that means it has a 5 in 36 chance of being rolled. A 9 has 4/36, 10 is 3/36, etc. A 7 is 6/36. In Catan with normal rules, a 13 point total placement is the highest you can get.

@@DyLightedCatan One of the main variables is the current chance of winning (and the accuracy of your estimation of it). If all things are equal or worse, you need to increase your probability and hope for a little luck. I think it's a pretty big mistake to block the 9 wood twice there towards the end of the game. Orange is clearly not even trying to win, so by blocking the 9 you're essentially saying that you think red could be a threat, which I think is a stretch given how close you were to winning. At this point it's clearly a two horse race between you and green, so blocking his 6 wood (which gives him a wood plus any other resource every time it's rolled) is the smarter play. I found it funny that both times you chose not to block it, a 6 was immediately rolled :) tbh though I think the game was basically over when you went first on this board. The other players made a big mistake not trying to lock you out of additional wheat/sheep for your second settlement.

If a 7 didn’t hit on my next turn then I’d have a city and a development card, vs your play of still having a literal dead hand. I think you have to look at the risk and reward. The reward is too great to not hold. It also doesn’t make sense to 4:1 for a wood when I could still get Year of Plenty or Road Building. If I did 4:1 for a wood and built a road the next turn my hand is stuck. Let’s compare this to holding my cards where I got 7’d out and still had a city in my hand. A city is better than a road,
