How I designed and made a very accurate homemade level. Such a tool is designed to monitor the condition and repair of machine tools.

Thanks for making the video! I am starting out as a home machinist with a cheap Chinese 7x14 mini lathe and a Sieg X2D mini mill. I am learning metrology so these will be my test and learning subjects to improve upon. Once I am confident with these I am planning a high precision mill with concrete or epoxy granite, so developing precision measuring, lapping and scraping skills are essential.

I'm fascinated by levels. I have ten maybe. Some .5mm a couple .05 and even a .02 in a meter. I find it all interesting and I am glad I found your channel. Thanks for posting and taking the time to share.

I have an English ampoule 0.01 mm per meter, I plan to make a level based on it. material will be published, I hope.

Excellent! What an elegant, high quality tool! I made a precision level a few years ago, and it's actually better than a precision indicator for measuring flatness and straightness. Mine has 3 point contact, also made from drill, about 4MM polished to a ball radius. Adjustment is by a 3cm wedge with about 3UM thickness difference from end to end, so it takes almost 2 screw turns to move the bubble 1 graduation. Not tweaky at all!

I have some of these levels, including one from a Zeiss transit... I was easily able to see wear on my lathe ways, and knowing the sensitivity, one can get a very good 'approximation' of the amount of wear on areas with a long enough span (about 7-10 cm).

I will do so, but in a slightly different way, on a special stand, there will be certain benefits.

This version of the level, complete with a stand for precise control of the position of the workpiece of an accurate ruler in space, allowed me to make a ruler 1070 mm long and 70 mm wide with a surface error of less than one micron.

I was thinking that you could use a flexure mechanism to "multipy" sensitivity, at the expense of a bit more surface pressure...

What are the purpose of the slots in the device? Weight reduction?
@gena_bazarko
@gena_bazarko 6 ай бұрын
Yes, the smaller the weight of the device, the better, because its mass affects the geometry of the surface being measured.

Bubble level is unsuitable for such precision, simply because bubble size depends on temperature, increase temperature a little, fluid expands, bubble gets smaller and you get wrong measurements.
@gena_bazarko
@gena_bazarko 8 ай бұрын
But it is possible to carry out measurements observing a regime that excludes temperature changes from the beginning to the end of the measurements. I have used this technique several times and it allows the surface of a surfase plate meter long by meter wide to be processed in the direction of maximum flatness leading to submicron accuracy. This method works great.

Compared to electronic pendulum/LVDT levels, bubble levels were far less accurate and stable over time, from my experience. Pendulum level like Talyvel, you set it up on surface plate, zero it, leave it for 1/2 day, it will still be close to zero, when you return. My Stiefelmayer bubble levels, bubble shrinks and expands with temperature, takes much longer to take a reading and it's far less repeatable than a Talyvel.

@@hinz1 I'm interested in hearing about your experiences using an electronic level. Unfortunately, I don’t have this level yet and I can’t practice working with it. It's probably quite expensive. In any case, in Ukraine I won’t be able to find one like this to buy at all; we practically don’t have anything like it. Although there are many other special devices, and they can be purchased relatively inexpensively.

Yes but if you run test in a shot period of time that works quite fine , I have a HP interferometer 5500 and a Federal 832 but that costly to very costly equipment the classic ''bubble'' system as describe in the video allow a nice DIY system at reasonable cost . Another interesting system is the 0737-1203-99 ±0.5° Glass Single-Axis Electrolytic Tilt Sensor fron Fredericks .
