Do you recommend high range practice daily? Or every other day? I know athlete's strength training will alternate days, wondering if the same is effective on trombone or if it's better to be consistent.
@PeterSteinerOfficial3 жыл бұрын
I do it daily since the high range is not mainly about strength for me. I work on my air and relaxation in the high register while trying to remove all tension - strengthening my muscles goes hand in hand with that but I don’t see it as heavy lifting...

Hi there 😀 I would suggest working on the exercises In this video on a regular basis. In addition to these I work a lot on scales (especially major scales) in the high regular using glissando from note to note - focusing on letting the air do most of the work and relaxing. Have fun experimenting 😀

I see at 9:00 you slightly adjust for intonation on certain partials, especially as you get into the farther positions. Do you have e a good resource for pitch tendencies for partials so I can begin to incorporate them into my practice? Thanks
@PeterSteinerOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! You are correct, certain notes on the instrument have to be altered in order to be in tune. I just checked “trombone pitch tendency chart” on google gives good results 😀

Hi so I have been trying to reach a high D for a piece I am working on and I have been playing it in isolation (I've been trying to play a d about 800 times every day) but even after 2 weeks it's still is a note that barely comes out when played in context. The sad thing is it isn't even close to my highest note do you have any tips about how I can get better at playing it in context?
@PeterSteinerOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Keep at it 😀 unfortunately sometimes development takes a bit longer than we would like, give it time… make sure to always approach it with a good sound and with the least possible tensions in your body.
@russtrombone Жыл бұрын
This is a very good exercise but the one thing missing from this tutorial is advice on what to do when it fails before we get to the end of the sequence. Personally I am making it up to High D then my embouchure collapses. When that happens what should I do next, Thanks Peter! 😎
@PeterSteinerOfficial Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! Never force yourself through an exercise - when your embouchure is done, it’s done 😀 So you need to build up endurance very patiently… practice the sequence without me and work particularly on the ease that you establish from each repetition to the next. If you build a comfortable feeling in the low/middle register you can recreate that feeling also in the high register - build comfort and ease, without tensions and without squeezing the high notes out 😀 You can do it!

@@PeterSteinerOfficial Thank you so much for your advice Peter 👍. I sound and feel really comfortable up until the high D which then feels hard work. It's like there's a wall between D flat and D 🥴. Are there other high register exercises you would recommend? I try to play this exercise three times per day with at least a couple of hours in between.. Thank you!
@PeterSteinerOfficial Жыл бұрын
@@russtrombone I am happy to hear that up to the D it feels great 😊 Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and try to approach it with ease and a relaxed feeling from your body - it will happen one day when you least expect it. Keep at it patiently and don’t force it. Building range takes a loooooong time and that’s one of the reasons why we all practice - there is no magic 😉 I have some additional high range exercises in my Warm-Up package that you can get from my Website!

@@PeterSteinerOfficial I just switched from a Bach 61/2L to a Bach 5G and I am happy about the feel and the improved sound, but I have lost my ability to easily pitch the high notes. So I am wondering if I should look for a compareable mouthpiece with less cup depth. How does a Willies mouthpiece size 5 compare?
@PeterSteinerOfficial2 жыл бұрын
@@savetheclimate2292 hi there! How long have you been playing on the new mouthpiece? Usually it takes some time to adjust and yes - your lips might have to change things in order to play the high register. Size 5 is always size 5, little details change here and there but the cup depth will be similar.

Everybody seems to know what this mystical „playing with air“ is all about. Sry, but this phrase is useless unless there is someone whose talent and intuition are capable managing everything, which is hardly propable. I think you could at least mention a source like Malte Burba where one can learn how it actually works. Nonetheless, thank you very much for these three courses!
@PeterSteinerOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. I try to pass on information that I find helpful myself. I believe the concept of playing with air is one of the most natural concepts one can apply to brass playing, simply because we are all good breathers naturally! My teachers had to point it out to me as well as a student but honestly I never felt overwhelmed with this information. When trombonist don’t “play with air” they are relying on muscles to do the work instead of the air. There is more content on this topic on my teaching platform if you are interested. I don’t think this concept is useless and don’t think one needs special talents to make it happen. The concept of air was also not invented by one or a hand-full brass pedagogues… not sure how many people I would have to mention then.
