High Road to Taos Scenic Route From Santa Fe To Taos

The High Road to Taos Scenic Byway takes the traveler through an authentic remnant of Old Spain, still evident in the religion, architecture, topography, history, and people along the route.
The byway travels through Chimayo, a community known for the beautiful Santuario de Chimayo and the El Posito, a hole in the floor of a side chapel filled with healing earth. Along N.M. 76, the byway follows through the creased and crinkled badlands, polka-dotted with scrubby pinon and juniper, with the Jemez Mountains enormous on the horizon.
Distance: 105 miles/170 KM
Driving Time: 2-1/2 hours from Santa Fe to Taos (no stops)
Trip Time: As there are so many interesting places to stop along the way, this trip can take from 4 to 7 hours. Please allow some extra time to enjoy this unique scenic byway and its tiny villages along the way.
Route: From Taos Plaza, Hwy. 68 south to Ranchos de Taos; Hwy. 518 east; Hwy. 75 west to Peñasco; Hwy. 76 south to Trampas, Truchas, Cordova and Chimayó; Hwy. 68 south to Santa Fe; Hwy. 68 north to Española and Taos.

Thank you for this beautiful little drive. I’m hoping to drive from Santa Fe to Taos next year and I have to avoid high roads and curvy crazy drop offs and this looks like it’s doable for me.

Santa Fe and Taos are at the same elevation, so there isn’t much extreme climbing or descending.

I think a lot of people think they have driven “the high road” but they are wrong. The High Road to Taos is 503 which is a fairly stretchy road with no guardrails and such. Then 503 joins 76 which isn’t sketchy. 😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉😮😮😮😅😅😅😊😊😊
