Fred Silverman hated games shows so he canceled this show along with Hollywood Squares and Chain Reaction for The David Letterman Show but the joke was on him as the show only lasted 90 episodes as people weren't used to that type of programing on daytime TV, were protesting him for canceling those three shows or also found the other programs on CBS and ABC to be more entertaining. He kept Card Sharks and Password Plus because of his better working relationship with Mark Goodson and he almost canceled Wheel of Fortune to expand The David Letterman Show from 90 minutes to 2 hours but because Wheel of Fortune was a success and Letterman wasn't, the show was shortened to 60 minutes until October when it was officially canceled and NBC returned to a regular daytime schedule with Blockbusters and Las Vegas Gambit. Things got worse for Silverman after a dispute with Chuck Woolery made him leave and the producers wanted Pat Sajak to take over which Silverman didn't approve of. With so many cancelations and disagreements, Silverman was let go from the network in late 1981. This show eventually returned to syndication for one season in 1987 with Wink Martindale as host because Trebek was already busy hosting Jeopardy and Classic Concentration at the time. Letterman would soon find better success with Late Night a few years after his daytime show were canceled. Hollywood Squares and Chain Reaction would also return at different times over the next few decades. As for Silverman, he went on to form his own production company shortly after leaving NBC.

Yes, three of the shows his production company were responsible for were Matlock, a comeback vehicle for Andy Griffith, Jake and the Fatman, a comeback vehicle for William Conrad, and In The Heat of the Night, a comeback vehicle for Carroll O'Connor. In addition, his production company was responsible for the Perry Mason TV movies. So, in a sense, Silverman got the last laugh.
