Two high school boys helped my mother once when the wheel of her wheelchair got stuck in a drainage grate. They pulled over and got out and picked her up and had her sit in the back seat while they freed the wheel. Then they gave her a ride home as she was on her way home with groceries. But it didn't end there. A few days later they came back with friends who had made wider wheels for her in shop class and refitted her wheelchair with wheels that wouldn't get stuck in the grate any more. I didn't find out until I saw the wheels and asked her about it. The boys never asked for anything in return. My brother's and I tracked them down to thank them. None of us were rich but we each had different things we could do in return. I do portraits so I painted portraits of their parents for them to give them as gifts. One of my brothers was a mechanic so he fixed up a couple of things on the car they were in. Another brother worked in the funeral industry and learned one had recently lost their grandmother but they couldn't afford a gravestone so he made some calls and arranged for her to get one free. My oldest brother worked for a restaurant and personally catered a pool party for them and their families. And while the retrofit of my Mom's wheelchair was an incredibly nice gesture, we didn't let Mom go grocery shopping alone any more.

@@EnjoyingLifeMelanie It's a bit late for that unfortunately. This all happened about 18 years ago. My mother has since passed and one of the boys was killed in a car accident ten years ago. The others I have lost track of. It never occurred to any of us a the time that anyone would find our story interesting. My Mom would have been too embarrassed for anyone to find out she got suck in a drainage grate. We had to talk her into revealing what happened to her wheelchair.

I’ve had to call 911 twice in the past week. I have come across 2 separate elderly people in the last week who had suffered pretty gnarly falls. One in a store parking lot, and one lady in her driveway I just happened to notice driving by. Keep your eyes open when it’s slick out!

I fell down the stairs 2-3 years ago and I’m in my 30’s and I can tell you it was so painful and traumatic. My feet went way up in the air and I landed really hard on my left leg which took the brunt of it and went down the stairs. I laid at the bottom of the stairs ready to throw up and almost passed out from the pain. So I can’t imagine what the elderly feel. I’m sure it’s just so painful and awful for them and very traumatic too. Having people come to them and even just stay right next to them until help arrives is so comforting.

Thank you! I'm one of those elderly and winter is so hard to get through safely. Finally found an easy on/off pair of crampons which are great if you live in rural areas.

@Fight Milk...You're right about keeping your eyes open. Also your ears. A few years ago, my brother after visiting with our Mom and going back to his car thought he heard someone call for help. He listened a few seconds and heard it again so he went to her elderly neighbor's house and found him in his yard where he had fallen. If my brother hadn't found him he would have died, it was cold and at night.
