This is a VHS capture of an anime OVA from 1992 called "High School Jingi." The OVA follows Yazuka member Jouji, who is ordered to teach a high school class of misfits. He soon must balance his schoolteacher life and his mob life as he tries to settle a score with a rival, and he may even find love in the process.
This OVA was only ever released on VHS, and was never until now preserved digitally. The tape was obtained by us and captured on a JVC BR-S822 S-VHS deck in 480i resolution, 60 frames per second. The image was upscaled for this upload to 4K to avoid KZbin compression, and due to this it has also been deinterlaced, but otherwise, nothing about the original capture was altered in any way.

@KurdishTiger Yakuza specifically? I dunno. I've found a lot of fansubs from older delinquent anime though. Be-Bop High School and Rokudenashi Blues have a few.

I dont get it with most vhs captures of anime content, they're not in 60 or 50, processed incorrectly and more. this is how tapes should be shown in term of quality capture.

I would love to find this on film, for sure. But it seems like it may have been edited on tape due to some effects in the OVA, so it may not be possible.

There really is no fixing that haloing is there? I can never figure out what causes it, has to be something with the heads but anime transfers always seem to suffer the worst, repeating the edge at least once

I'm the one who digitized this tape, and I did make an encode without the intense ringing, which made the footage too blurry and wasn't really worth it. Maybe the softness can be fixed with an AI program, but I don't want to employ that sort of radical solution that can alter or distort what's originally shown in the footage. I tried capturing this with several different VCRs but the haloing was still there regardless of models. I think it was caused during the production process, so this is pretty much the raw quality of this production.

@@TheWorldDBZ I have the same issue with my Panasonic AG-1960. Same problems with AVISynth and dehaloing too, loses way too much detail. Honestly makes me glad to know this isn't just a problem with my VCR alone if even you of all people are having issues with it. Thanks for the reply, really respect the work you've done

@@remembrance9134In principle, ringing is caused by the edges of waveforms of luminance information being overly protruding. I lack knowledge on the mechanical aspect of VCRs, so I don't know how it is actually caused in their playback processes, but I suppose a lot of VCRs purposely provoke ringing by emphasizing waveforms in order to compensate the low horizontal resolutions of analog videotape formats. Most Betamax VCRs from Sony come with a switch named "EDIT" that can turn off this sharpening filter, but none of my VHS decks have that kind of option. Panasonic tended to give weight to sharpness when it comes to consumer VCRs, so yours might purposely cause the haloing too.

@@TheWorldDBZ My Panasonic actually does have that editing switch because it's a Pros-sumer editing VCR, but turning it to edit mode doesn't help all that much, still has edge ringing. Makes sense it would be that filter though. From what I've seen the AG-1980 doesn't have that as much as others, but based upon what you're saying it seems that most of these pro-decks all seem to have that luminance issue to some degree. I'm sure capturing in S-Video doesn't help because of the clarity it provides, making the ringing even more noticeable. But like you said, it's a small price to pay for the clearer image

@@remembrance9134 I captured this OVA with JVC's professional model BR-S822, which comes with the edit mode, but what it does is basically just turning off the noise reduction filter and increasing the noise in luminance.

How do you know a capture is from VHS? The light halos have dark halos that have light halos that have dark halos. Good work though. VHS captures can be a real headache, even in the best of circumstances.
