That's a great question. Despite not having work experience nor ever volunteering, I would focus on your skills in choir. Let's think for a moment, what are some of the skills it takes to be in a choir? Do you work with other members of the choir? Do you have to rehearse? Does it demand a certain level of dedication to be good? I would dig deep here and try to focus on these areas from the choir experience. And if you love choir, show your passion for it. For many jobs, recruiters hire the person! Skills and training can be given on the job!

Do you have any other skills that might be valuable to an employer or a job that you want to go for? Additionally, maybe you've not had these other work experiences yet, but how about going for a volunteer role, even if it's just a couple hours a week? The benefits are two fold. You gain experience in a field and also network and meet many new people. Many times, with the skills you gain on this volunteer job and the people you meet, open a lot of doors for you and can help you land your next job.

There isn't a specific rule in this case. If you deem that your middle school sport's experience is relevant, then by all means, add it. Playing sports is a great thing to add on resumes as it demonstrates teamwork, work ethic, focus, and many other things. I would consider adding your middle school sports experience.

Great advice. Yes, some people do include references in the resume and this can help facilitate the process. Other times, when submitting a resume, you sometimes have to fill in a series of fields on a website and normally there will be a spot to fill in your references information (name, number, email, etc). Regardless, it is important to have this information on hand so that when it is requested, you can quickly furnish it. Once again, thanks for bringing this up! Great advice!

The fact is, volunteer opportunities can come in all shapes and sizes. Feel free to add your different volunteer experiences. Here is a short list of some common volunteer opportunities: animal rescue shelters, food pantries, national parks, habitat for humanity, fund raise or sell items to raise money for a cause, tutor/teach, referee, among many others. Those are great certificates to have and I would definitely add them to your resume. You can add them to the skills section. You could also add them to the Extracurricular section if you prefer. If you haven't had any professional experience or informal work experience, focus on what you have done in school, extracurricular activities, internships, volunteer work, educational achievements etc. Align these aspects with what the job is requesting (Job description). Remember, for most entry-level jobs, employers are not expecting you to have a lot of experience, if any at all. What you do need to do is demonstrate your interest and how the other skills you've attained will assist you in the job.

That is a great question. Let's try connect some of your examples to the fast food job you want to apply for. I'm not sure how well photography fits in, however, imagine it is a small fast food restaurant and maybe they want some help doing some ads, visuals, banners, etc. Maybe this skill of photography could come in handy and be worthwhile to mention. Microsoft office-definitely. You can use it for tons of things. I would also add that you are fluent in languages. This will allow you to give customer service to speakers of other languages. This can be extremely helpful! So, to answer your question, i would actually consider these to be relevant skills and would add them. That's a great question, Electro, and for many people, this is the case. They have not been a part of any club, groups, or teams. There are a couple of alternatives that you could add. Do you have any hobbies that are directly or even indirectly related to the job or field you are aiming for? If yes, I would mention them in the resume. Secondly, you could try to volunteer for a company/organization to try to gain some relevant experience that you can add on your resume. This never hurts and will only benefit you. Lastly, you could (if possible) find a group, club, or sports team that is of interest to you and join. Hope I was able to answer your question.

Fantastic and very relevant question, Maddy McElroy. Yes, you can! On my own resume, I label these under the skills section or Core Competencies. So the items you have added such as Team Player, Goal Oriented, and People Person are perfectly relevant for this section. One extra tip here, for each of the items you add, make sure in your mind you have a clear example of how you are a people person or team player. It is very common for a recruiter to see certain things on a resume and then say, "So, could you tell me about a time when you were a team player." These questions come up a lot, so be prepared to give some context on them. Hope this was helpful!

That's a great question and I believe there are two answers to it. The first I would say is that there is not much relevance of having your CNA certification on your resume and applying to retail. However, every time you get a new certification, this demonstrates that you studied, prepared, and focused to get it. This conveys more about you as a professional. In that sense, and to answer your question, I would include it on your resume. The one thing I would be aware of is, when you go in for an interview, be prepared for the interviewer to ask you the question, "I see you are a certified CNA, why are you pursuing a job in retail?" In the USA, GPA's are pretty important, but you should also invest time in extracurricular activities, volunteer programs, sports, and other activities of interest that push you toward your goals. Adding these other activities on your resume make a huge difference and definitely get recruiters' attention.

HR/ Hiring Managers care about EXPERIENCE only. Keep it short and to the point. This is the one situation where an 'objective' and 'summary' sections can be put in but it has to be a few lines only, this section is typically just skipped over if you have experience. These videos are made by people who clearly haven't been in the job market for over a decade. HR gets so many applications in they simply do a quick scan and move on, you need to start low like grocery or fast food. You simply need a pulse for these jobs, a resume shows you put in an extra effort which can help you. Most important thing is to gain experience to put on a resume. Lean heavy on soft skills (communication, friendliness, tech literacy, etc.)

That's a great question. In just about all of the cases I've seen, candidates tend to use normal printer paper. The only exception might be if you are in the design industry and have different images on your resume etc. But in this situation mentioned, most candidates would send it via email. For your Taco Bell interview, normal printer paper would suffice. Best of luck on your interview!

So essentially, a resume and a CV are the same thing. There is a third item called a Cover Letter. A cover letter is normally sent together with your resume. It is generally an introduction of who you are, your interests, your motivation for the job/school etc. So in your case of wanting to apply to college, you would need a cover letter. That is a great question and thanks for bringing this up. Sometimes this is the case, no job experience, never volunteered, don't play sports or have any extracurricular activities etc. This is actually quite common. The trick here is to get started building your experiences so you can create a strong resume. Are there any hobbies or extracurricular activities that interest you? Are there any courses that you can take online? Are there volunteer opportunities in your area? There are a lot of Massive Online Open Courses (Coursera, Hubspot, Udacity, EDX and many others)that you can take online for free. Some of these even give certificates. These are great to start furthering your knowledge and adding them to your resume. Also, search for volunteer opportunities in your region. This will allow you to get practical experience and will also build your references. These are just a couple of ways to get started. I hope that I have helped answer your question.

Great question. If you have good grades, consider adding your GPA on your resume. Since you don't do any extracurricular activities, what about volunteer work opportunities? Volunteer work can be a good way to gain work experience, network, and is a nice addition to your resume.

That's a great question. Since you don't have your grades yet, skip over this section. Once you get them, you can update your resume. Remember, your resume is a document that you will come back to quite often to make adjustments and to update. So once you get them, you can add them.

That's a great question and this can possibly vary from state to state. In most cases, if you bring your driver's license and have your SSN ready to add on the form, that normally suffices ( at least for all the places I've worked at). I have never been asked to have my birth certificate and medical card. Did an employer ask for these two items?
