People that purposely ignore context in situations do so because that context weakens their own, ultimately wrong, position. The fact is the teacher only said the n-word because he was trying to get its casual use by the students in his classroom stopped. That shouldn't be ignored and it should be supported. Could he have done so without actually using the word himself, perhaps, but not necessarily, and to ignore the "WHY" and "HOW" of his use of the word means you recognize there is significance in those contextual aspects and you're only ignoring or dismissing them because it damages your own position and/or what you are trying to accomplish. If that is what you have to do to try to accomplish something, what you're trying to accomplish has no merit at best and is detrimental or harmful at worst. Acting like there is no difference between addressing someone as the n-word and telling students you do not want the n-word used in the school are two HUGELY different situations. To demand the man be fired simply for the use of the word, ignoring how and why he used it, AND what he was ACTUALLY trying to accomplish is just petty and you're only acting outraged and calling for essentially his "cancellation" because you think it will personally benefit YOU in donations or whatever else by stirring more outrage for the sake of outrage. The real ridiculousness of this is people are treating it like you have to pick a side, that the students are wrong or the teacher is. The intelligent and reasonable thing to do would be to look at the entire situation and find the better response that exists between the two extremes. Ask the teacher to apologize for using the word (especially since he was trying to get its use stopped) but also support the teacher in his intent to get the word's use stopped in the school. They want a zero-tolerance policy? Then it should be the policy for everyone, not one for teachers but not students or for white people but not black. That is an unequal policy, not a zero-tolerance policy. Now they have the man who was trying to get his students to respect themselves and their fellow students in how they choose to address each other being forced to put out some apology saying he is racist instead so he can keep his job (I'm absolutely certain he was told he'd have to release an apology like that in order to keep his job). The whole point that students, any students, should not be using that word at school (preferably at all) has been completely lost in all of this and something that was started with good intent has been twisted into a mess causing further racial tension. I'll say one final thing in this excessively long post...If the black community wants the n-word's use and negative power to be stopped, then they need to stop using the word themselves, because it is the black community that is keeping that word alive. Initially, it can make sense to change the power and intent of the word by using it in a different and more positive context (see how important context is now?) but as time moves on and more and more generations are born into our society, the more there are people that only learn of the word and only perpetuate it's use through that new meaning. The history of that word can't be changed, however, and while it should never be forgotten, the word's use should be stopped. As this whole event has shown, no matter what you do to change the word, its original evil will always remain a part of it. Much like the swastika, the best thing for us all would be to give up it's use regardless of intent so as to avoid situations like these from occurring.

Blacks and whites alike seem to always make excuses for using the word and it's disgusting to me. I did my best to make my children understand why they should never utter that word and to be an example to other African Americans and to make white people understand that it's an intolerabe word. Black parents, uncles, aunts, cousins..... all of us need to stop! Growing up my parents taught me "do as I say, not as I do" is not right, but to be the example of what to do. When it comes to caucasian people, you guys need to understand that word is disrespectful on so many levels when it comes to the history of black people and white people. That word breeds hate and evil inside of people and it’s just not smart to say that word around black people unless you’re a racists and you just don’t care or have any respect for black people or yourself. Bottom line is we are all children of God and this earth doesn’t belong to us so let’s just love one another and enjoy life without hating each other so much. No thank you because I don't like Nazis and this is some of the most racist crap I have witnessed in my life everybody saying they're only doing it to this guy because he's white has nothing to do with the word they're only railroading this guy because he's white and this is an instance where we can railroad a white straight male and get other white people to praise the situation and that is racism so you can take that Nazi propaganda and shove it some of us want real equity and equality not just a new form of 21st century Nazism

The teacher was insisting that the kids do not address each other by that word. He repeated it because the kids asked him to repeat it so they could record him. That is not using a racial slur, it is referring to a racial slurs to point out that its use is unacceptable. Pretending not to understand that distinction is malicious. The fact that the teacher had to issue an apology is like something out of an Orwellian dystopia. These horrible children should be ashamed of themselves.
