@@TheGrindcorps when a pit is done correctly, it’s safer and better than any other tactic to stop a suspect. Ending the chase early is the best possible option, other tactics let the chase go on longer. Spikes can make a chase more dangerous if not pitted after deploying. Tracking by helicopter, using a tracker, and disengaging pursuit are arguably more dangerous. People say when cops stop chasing, suspects slow down. Many videos and chases out there disprove that. People with nothing to lose will want to get away as far and as fast as possible and fatal crashes will happen with cops miles behind. Instead of criticizing the tactics, criticize the people that don’t do it right and the ones that put them in that decision in the first place. Not that hard of a concept…

The problem with these types of interviews is they show a very small and focused portion of what is done and considered. They tend to focus on the number of pit maneuvers performed but ONE chase ending with a TVI or a suspect stopped, tends to have stopped an uninvolved individual or family not being injured. The pit is done to STOP the threat. Unlike cities like LA or Detroit or Chicago that follow them around and don't care if their suspect kills someone. And the majority of the time that the pit is performed is BECAUSE other departments like West Memphis or Little Rock PD has REQUESTED the trooper to pit the fleeing suspect. They would rather the state do it and damage a trooper car instead of a city vehicle.

It's as simple as this if an officer has the vehicles information and if a high speed pursuit could in any way endanger the public the police should call off the pursuit PERIOD. They can later arrest the driver or owner of said vehicle. These high speed pursuits more often than not unnecessary. Granted fleeing felons and certain other situations say the tags on fleeing vehicle are bogus and a few other situations pursuits are warranted. ASP has carried this shit to far cause high speed pursuits ALWAYS have a chance of endangering innocents. Let em run off then arrest at home. The only time pursuits should continue to a pit maneuver is in cases of fleeing felons and where it is determined that if the vehicle is let go they somehow are a continued public danger.
