Luckily that didn't slow me down I also got all of my safety certs and experience too. Chippies also earn less than plumbers and electricians. We require more tools to do the job and most likely our job is more physically strenous. Bu the upside is major job satisfaction aswell as you get to smell timber all of the time 😀😀

Carpentry and especially framing are a young man’s game. You don’t want to be framing at 55-60. The thing no one talks about when thinking about starting a business as a tradesman is how to run a “business”. You can be the best at your particular trade but if you start getting employees you are now a business owner. I know lots of trades guys who are in business, they have no clue and get in trouble either with the IRS or state. If you work for and by yourself, you don’t really have a business, you have a good paying job. I’m 58 and have been in the HVAC and electrical trades since I was 16. So.i bought a door knob drilling kit and a proper chisel and taught myself how to cut out hinges old school style. It took less then 1 day to do 2 doors and I bet tons of younger carpenters don't even know how to do it that way because new doors come pre hung in the frame. I was a gas appliance repairman ---- mainly repairing gas furnaces and gas fireplaces. I was self employed with no employees. That worked out well for me. I figured my income per billable hour, including the margin on parts sales, was $125, and I retired in 2007 at age 57. I could have charged a lot more than that ----most people do. And too often, the "repairman" is mainly interested in selling people new equipment, not repairing what people have. I liked to take much of the summer off. I could be cruising in my boat in British Columbia and take calls to do work ----when I planned to be back in Seattle. Especially when demand was slack, my preferred work hours were from noon-2PM. I could schedule my time to suit myself. During the winter there was often unlimited amounts of work available, and I might put in some long days when I was interested in doing so.

So I took it to a tire shop that sold new tires and did that kind of service. They came back and said it needed four new tires. Well, my old heap probably DID need four new tires ---but was that the cause of the vibration? A week or two later I was ready to back in to my parking space at home ----and the gearshift would not engage! I was stuck in the middle of the road. I solicited help from a repair shop a couple of blocks away, and they found that a drive to the front wheel drive (AWD) was broken off and jammed. They disconnected the AWD to the front wheels. That not only got me mobile again, but the vibration was gone too ---- a failing part! I'll bet the tire shop never bothered jacking things up and looking. Just $800 for new tires, please.

As an owner, the sky's the limit as far as income potential and it doesn't matter the trade. As a tradesmen working in the field elevator mechanic is the highest paying trade (at least that I know of). Right below them are service plumbers, service electrians, hvac/refrigeration techs, welders, lineman. I disagree with this video's number one selection of Carpenter. The average Carpenter (none owner just an employee), isn't pulling in near the check as the trades listed above.

I agree. We do primarily residential remodels and over the past few years the rates I can charge for plumbing and electrical work have gotten borderline obscene. Finding young men to teach and work is my biggest challenge. Everybody wants to make big money but they don't want to work. That said, I’m a 16 year commercial Union electrician, and I would say residential and commercial experiences are very different. Residential carpenters seem happier than commercial, and commercial electricians more than residential. Commercial Electrical in my area pays substantially more than carpentry, and the Union is much stronger. At the end of the day though, you have to enjoy it right? That’s a big point I see in most of the comments here. I still love what I do and can take care of my family doing it.

As a union electrician you are incorrect. Currently here in Bay Area union foreman is 92$ an hour . Hourly we make more . Yes yearly you will make more due to unlimited OT . As far as working conditions you are mainly working outside in the elements and climbing poles , as well as the danger factor . I contemplated getting into line work . Overall I feel electrician is the better route . You are a close second tho 😂

It wasn't 20 years ago that carpenters would have been at the bottom of the list. Being able to measure, cut, and erect a structure is a skill that can't be taught in college. Seeing as how all other trades come after framing, it's not surprising that the dissatisfaction of pay from carpenters/framers has propelled them to top of the list.

Thing won't change until builders n contractors start paying more to to the trades people. Most of us got in the trades because it paid more for our services over flipping burgers but as it stands now those jobs are catching up to what trades people are paid. So you want to trades people to came back gotta raise what you pay your trades people for the cost of living. Meaning more money for getting stuff done or you get shitty half ass jobs ( ugly unprofessional work gets done) perfection n doing things right cost money a lot of money. So all in all you need people pay your workers just to retain them and they gotta be taking care of, so no big houses , new rides or boats until the people on site get a fair wage for their services.
