I’m a capitalist. But if you work 120 hours a week, you’re literally living just to work for someone. Like as soon as you go home you’re in bed just to get enough sleep to keep you going, then as soon as you wake up you’re away again.

@@Americanheld yeah I thought that was always the point? Do that then take a middle office role in a nice office that is yours, with a little team under you, and most of that IB salary if not more but under MUCH more flexible hours. Especially if you take this middle office role in a less bustling state (I assume the first job would be Chicago or NYC)

You think link a commie. Projecting your individual tastes and preferences as universal. Hayek called this the Knowledge problem when you translate this to s planned economy. (Communism). You are a special person when you hold a $250k+ a year position. You love what you do. I make 6 figures and "work" [I sell my labor, but I'm not here to start a wage slavery argument] 65+ hours a week. Honestly I'd like to work more. Not because I have to but because I genuinely enjoy what I do. Most executives have to have this mindset or they will fail. Kyrie Irving must play basketball 80+ hours a week. I wouldn't tell him "you must just exist to work" I would tell him "you must love basketball"

I recently went through recruiting for S&T and secured an offer with a bulge bracket bank. Coming from a non-target school, I would say the biggest factor for my success was getting into a wall street developmental program in my school early on. Getting involved on campus, posting strong grades and extracurriculars, knowing your markets, and knowing your story are crucial! Great video, more freshman finance majors should be shown this on day 1 of college.

Great video, wish it was available when I was a freshman or sophomore in college. Another thing for students to consider, you don't need to start off in New York to be making this type of money. You'll likely be compensated close to your peers in NYC, if not the same, and your $100k/yr will go a lot further in cities such as Dallas, Houston, Charlotte which is great if you carry a large debt load. Plus, those cities typically aren't quite as competitive for spots and can lead to roles in cities such as New York or San Francisco after a year or two. For those of you that are either late to the game or not gaining any traction with roles in New York, this is a very viable path as well.

Great video and from someone who has worked in the industry for about 20 years, one of the areas you might want to cover is wealth management/private wealth. Also a very lucrative career with an more entrepreneurial spirit, but in many cases (especially if you're running your own firm: RIA, etc.), there really isn't a "cap" on your income. I went the asset management (tier 2) route after college. After working in the industry over the last few years I've been seeing a lot of challenges in this field. Companies like Vanguard and Fidelity have been outsourcing jobs a lot. Vanguard recently outsourced jobs to India that were originally in the United States. Not to mention automation is doing a lot of the work now. What else I realized is that if you want any kind of analytical role, such as being a mutual fund analyst or a trader, being a CFA or working toward the CFA designation I think may become the standard. Out of the 20 traders I worked with about 19 of them were CFA's. Just my opinion here, if you really want to excel in asset management, if you can't get into a top 10 or 20 MBA program, go for the CFA. But it's tough as nails to pass. Again that's my two cents, best of luck to everyone who loves this industry as much as I do.

The only job I could find (that interest me) requires any business degree and it's for the research analyst role. My major is not directly related to what I just applied for but I think it would be a great opportunity for me to learn a lot of things that weren't taught in school that I would also be able to apply in real life. So yeahhhh goodluck to me!! I still have to take an exam for it at the company I applied to. :) Goodluck to anyone reading this as well 😊

@Jimmy Volpe You could pursue a career in college but it needs to be in high demand in the market. Or you could spend sometime learning how to invest and how stock market works and use your college fund as capital. Doesn't take a degree because the stock market does not care where and what your education is from. Learning it would be the best in my opinion because it applies to everything related to financial decisions. If you don't know what career to choose from or still searching what to do in life, it doesn't hurt to learn how money works because it is applicable to everything. From your food, clothes, shelter, and hair, you will spend some money. So why not learn how to accumulate money first then find out what you want to do in life? At least you have covered your basic necessities. If you cover that part of your life then regardless if you get old, you will get some type of income coming your way and wouldn't be dependant on a job/pension/government.

I hope this helps someone out- I went to a state school, didn’t know much, but I thought I wanted investment banking. I’ve been chasing it for years, just never panned out. I still got into private equity. Don’t chase the money, if you work hard and make smart moves you’ll make money. Remember 200k in New York is much different than 200k in let’s say, Atlanta. Try to make the smartest moves you can asking questions from successful people.

Thank you for the info breakdown. Do you think the finance career paths your defined in your video be feasible for someone who didn’t major in business/finance in college? For context, I majored in Public Health and am currently working in the biotechnology industry. I want to do a 180 career change into the stepping stone pathway. I’m just wondering about your thoughts on this.
@Mondballer_00
@Mondballer_00 2 жыл бұрын
Be aware that a 180 degree change in career might take a couple years. Other than that, if it really interests you, go for it! As you know a lot about healthcare in the biotech industry, maybe try to step your foot into healthcare consulting (which also implies market research --> big plus) and TAS (transaction advisory services), DD (due diligence), deal advisory. Use your prior experience and expertise as an asset and let it speak for yourself! From there you could go into pure M&A where you're advising for deals from step 1 to 10. Then, PE/VC/etc. To get there a bit quicker and make use of connections as mentioned in the video, a MiM degree or MBA could help! I'm sure there's more than 1 solution to that but in my opinion the best one for someone to slip into the glorified buy-side.

WM isn't part of capital markets. It's completely on its own. Banks are divided into three main streams: commercial, wealth and capital markets. Wealth won't be making big bucks like Capital Markets but it def is a solid career going down the road. Hours and pay are decent. U can try to switch into Investment Management roles down ur career and that's about it in terms of exit.

The unspoken truth here is that, after a certain point, you... don't. So many years detached from a non-target, it's basically impossible. What a lot of people end up doing, and what wasn't mentioned in this video, is that the "stepping stone" roles will often be stepping stones to first-year analyst positions. In other words, you start from square one. I went to a non-target (but still a good school) and knew quite a few people who suffered through 2-3 years at stepping stone jobs just to become IB analysts. IMO the only shot is to get into a top 10 MBA program or to get extremely lucky with working at a successful startup and being able to advance your credentials that way. It's a prestige-based business. If you really sift through what people are talking about on Wall Street Oasis, you'd quickly realize that this is a funnel-shaped career progression. Plenty of people never make it to where they originally thought they would.

Thanks for the awesome video! However I’d love to hear about possibilities for people who didn’t pick the right major. I was a political science major, entrepreneurship minor, but I went to an elite university and had around a 3.7. I had one internship for financial advisors at one of the major banks, but then had a really hard time landing a job in finance. I’ve got a great job in e-commerce for a very well known company (high Fortune 500) and am taking the CFA 1 in December (currently less than 1 yr out of school). Do you think the stepping stone route is a realistic possibility for me to eventually get to these buy side jobs?

Hi - first of all - thanks for the information - subscribed! I was wondering why the exit opportunities for smaller tier asset managers are different to the bigger tier managers - apart from the obvious - since, as you've mentioned, they do the same work? Is it just the signaling effect? Or where does the differential in human capital/skillset/experience lie between the two managers? Thanks in advance
@humanitasubique
@humanitasubique 3 жыл бұрын
Too further define my question: In your article you partially answer my question by saying: "Whether we like it or not, having it [i.e. well known name on your resume] adds credibility and makes you look more professional in the eyes of the person interviewing you." (=singaling effect) But -apart from the signaling effect- the employer wants the job/tasks to be optimally done... So my question is - is there a (or what is the) difference in skills/knowledge between small tier/big tier asset manager? The core (of pretty much all of the finance jobs mentioned) is the valuation of positions/entities, right? What is the most "objective" way to assess -apart from all the signaling proxies like GPA, degrees etc.- how well suited someone is for the job (in terms of methods known)? Differently asked - if an employer had the time - instead of screening for proxies - how would he test a potential employee for -let's say corporate development? In terms of methods - what is the most important, the most crucial, the most empirically based knowledge needed to perform well? (you may refer to names of models, papers, books etc.)
