A walk around the West Cemetery of Highgate. Filmed in April and June 2014, and takes in most of the monuments restored/repaired under the restoration programme of 2010-2014. And some that were not repaired!

Highgate opened in May 1839 with the first interment of Elizabeth Jackson. It situated on Swains Lane, Highgate, London, N6 6PJ. It comprises two cemeteries, the West was the above mentioned in 1839 followed by the East in 1854. The main entrances sit directly opposite one another. The movie is solely of the West cemetery and this is accessible only by guided tour. The East has an entrance fee but one is allowed to wander freely. All details can be found on the official website at highgatecemetery.org

The Beer mausoleum was built for, Ada Sophia Beer, who died at the age of 8 from Scarlet fever. Inside is a beautiful sculpture of an Angel enfolding her and raising her to heaven. Later Julius and other family members were laid to rest inside. Imagine what it would cost today to commission such a magnificent monument.

Beautiful Highgate, I was lucky enough to visit in 1984, we had a brief tour and then were able to explore on our own. It was still being cleared up and a very cold damp day which added to its melancholy feel. The next time I went in 2010, we went on the tour, but it was quite short.

I find it mind boggling, the amount of money spent on building these sepulchres and tombs. Even allowing for the cost of labour back then, some of them must have cost as much, or more than a house, given that they're made of shaped and carved Portland stone, granite, marble etc, roofed in stone and designed to last for eternity. How much was an angel carved on your headstone? Or a sleeping lion? I suppose some of them must have been mass produced in some form, as I see angels bending over graves in other cemeteries, but that sleeping angel laying on a bed of tomb with all the ripples and folds like fabric. Unbelievable. The Victorian way of death indeed. Thankyou for such an interesting and inspiring film.

Whomever has whatever monument they probably worked hard in their lifetime - saved for the time of their passing to come or their dear loved one(s). Think of the fact that they can't the money with them -- they're also helping others to live by paying them to make their monuments--& the beautiful cravings which many carve their own small mark be it a mark they would be known for or maybe their name engraved somewhere on the carvings. Me -- if I have any money when I pass -- I'd like a headstone that might make someone smile. (On the tombstone ) "Quite up there ! I'm trying to sleep!" 😉 (Then have a smiley face & three bowls on top of my headstone - one for nuts, one for seeds and in the middle have a birdbath - 🐿️🐦🦉🐈 That way I'd have some beautiful animals that might like to come around and say "hi". And after I'd left $ in a trust fund to pay for the food/water & it wasn't honoured -- I'd spend some time haunting abit😂 till the animals were taken care of. Actually I'm an Army Vet and probably be in a Military Cemetery. Or maybe donate my body to science. Once our bodies fail in my belief we leave the body behind and our soul will be free to go into the light. What say you?

I visited Highgate cemetery back in the early 2000s, was a place I'd wanted to see for some time as it was featured in a few of my favourite hammer horror films. When I finally got to see the place I was rather shocked by the poor condition of some of the crypts and monuments, the place was also very overgrown with weeds and brambles. I think the work of 'the friends of Highgate cemetery' must be highly commended, this place is looking fantastic and some of the repairs undertaken couldn't have been an easy task, well done.

If you are ever visiting North London this is so very worth doing comfy walking boots a drink.... Time almost stops it is serene & tranquil.... With some history that's worth hearing and famous and not so famous people entered there 👊💪👄🤘💃🏻👓🎓🎩💍💼🍺⚽️🎾🏏🏊🏻🏇🎭🎤🎨🎹🎻⚓️🚂🛳📺📻🎙🎥📷☠ And after walk up the hill to a lovely warm pub 🤗🤓👍🏻 P.s not for the faint hearted as it can be quite graphic at times 🤔💀🙈

I would think that it depends on the person- if they're opened enough for trying to get EVP's which is recording sprite voices. One can just walk in the cemetery day or night (though night seems better) and just take some random pictures, you may or may not get 'ghost pics'. Only on TV do ghosts do things on 'command' for the most part. Good luck .'

Highgate Cemetery consists of two cemeteries on opposite sides of Swains Lane. The older and original West Cemetery, and the later extension the East Cemetery. The video footage is exclusively of the West Cemetery. This can only be accessed by a guided tour, prebook through the cemetery website: www.highgatecemetery.org.uk The East Cemetery is accessed by paying for a ticket at the main entrance and then you can wander freely. Nearest tube is Archway on the Northern Line. Hope you get t visit and enjoy. Happy you liked the video.

Don't they have someone to keep up the grounds and cut the grass......or weeds!! What is wrong with the families of these people?! They should be outraged at the condition of the place! People paid a lot of money to have their family members buried there! And the coffins out in the open to be vandalized! Hard to believe that people no longer care about such things.

This is what happens when no one alive knows or remembers those buried in graveyards. It happens to all old graveyards. A photographer here where I live visited graveyards all over the state and published a book. There are lots of old graveyards abandoned and in ruin, or moved to make room for the needs of the living. Good argument for cremation, although I used to love wandering through them, too.

i think, especially right now, we shouldn’t remove people’s memorials. all history is valuable history.

I have an ancestor originally buried in Windsor Chapel, may have then been moved to Highgate. I live in New Zealand. Is there an online list of burials.

When was this cemetery established? It is very tranquil and surely it has so much history attached to it. Thanks for sharing.
