The history of Scotland's most famous clans. There can be few Highland Clans more mired in bloodshed than Clan Campbell. The Campbells combined an understanding of the law with formidable might to become the most powerful and influential clan in the country. But in the middle of the 17th century Scotland was ravaged by a bloody civil war that gave the Campbell's bitter rivals, the MacDonalds an opportunity to exact revenge. Thousands died as these two mighty Highland Clans battled for supremacy.

"Clan Campbell- a name universally loathed in the Highlands..." One of my stories my mom told me about my grandfather was when he was stationed in Scotland during WWII, and asked an old lady for directions to somewhere. When asked his name, he replied, "Arthur Campbell." The lady took one look at him and said, "I thought so, you look like a Campbell," then slammed the door to her house in his face. The kicker is my grandfather wasn't from Scotland, but a full-fledged American!😆

King William the Third, ordered all the clan chiefs to sign an oath of allegiance. MacIain of Glencoe delayed signing and when he arrived in Fort William, he found he had to go to Inveraray. Difficult travelling and the absence of a sheriff meant that MacIain did not sign the oath until 6th January 1692. MacIain returned home believing his signature was accepted. The king decided to punish MacIain. Campbell of Glenlyon led a group of some 128 soldiers who stayed with the MacDonalds... 38 died

No, I wouldn't. As a proud adopted member of Clan Campbell (My grandmother adopted my father into the clan when he was a baby, thus i'm part of it.) Even though the MacDonald's and the Campbells were, and still are enemies (Even my dad hates them, kinda.) We are all Scottish.

wasn't even a clan action. It was planned by the Scottish gvt; the papers were signed by the Scottish king; and it was carried out by troops in the pay of the Scottish gvt who just happened to be officered by a Campbell. Only a small percentage of the troops were Campbells. I think it suited central gvt to shed responsibilty and have people blame those awful highlanders again when in fact it was a state sponsored war crime!

Sept means to bear the same seed within a clan. This is common in Scottish clans and the Irish. You're a MacArthur. I'm a Campbell. Your clan was part of mine in the 13th century, yet, the division of clans was to distinguish one group from another (example: clans from the same territory). Yours became a sept to mine, or a descendant. Perhaps, you are part of the Campbells of Strachur, also known as the MacArthur Campbells of Strachur.

I’m a Campbell and booked all my travels under that name while in Scotland. I was there just 5 weeks ago! No one said anything negative and I loved everything about the country! Stayed at Loch Awe, visited Glencoe, and yes, it’s hauntingly beautiful and I am so glad I went. I stayed in Edinburgh, Stirling and visited castles and battlefields. I loved the monument for William Wallace and the stunning woodlands all over Scotland. The people were beautiful too. I would go back tomorrow if I could. I was really touched as my ancestors left for a better life and moved to Australia and New Zealand. If you look at history, the Scots had a warrior spirit and fought hard and long to maintain their heritage and land. I feel grateful for the sacrifices and hardships my own ancestors made when they left for a new life. I love my pale skin, pale golden freckles and blue eyes because I know where they come from! I’m learning Scottish Gaelic as a tribute to my heritage and I’m proud of the Campbell clan. Always! ❤

I wanted to add something else. It's not all bad history. On my side A Campbell has set a land speed record on a motorcycle (My grandfather) that still hasn't been beaten to this day. Myself have served in the military and law enforcement. I also have had motorcycle triumphs. I am Proud to be a Campbell. Just really sucks to hear we were all of the other stuff.

Rubbish, learn your history - The Crown wanted to make an example of some clan partly because of Campbell advice and it was the Campbells who picked MacIain and the macdonalds of glencoe to settle old scores and used Government troops to "shed responsibility". Clan Campbell had been loathed for centuries before Glencoe with good reason.
