This song was always very bleak, depressing, and sorrowful... but at the same time beautiful. The music really set the tone of a desperate people living in the shadow of a tyrant. It was incredible to see it performed like this. I got goosebumps from it. I looked at my arms to see how high the hairs were standing on end.

This is ABSOLUTELY incredible!! That cello, WOW. Quest 64 is one of my favorite games of all time (despite its... WELL,) and the Highlands music has been one of my favorite tracks of all time since very early childhood. The music of this game often gets overlooked when the game itself is mentioned. This song is brilliant and your rendition is absolutely amazing, it does so much justice to a song that really, really deserves it. Kudos on this amazing production!!

One of the most underrated games in the Nintendo 64 life span, unique mechanics, expansive confusing maps at times, and a complicated soundtrack hard to capture on a 64bit restriction.

I find myself coming back to this remix often. If Quest were made these days, I'd imagine it would sound something like this. Just. Gorgeous. ... Maybe it wasn't the best game, but it was definitely one of the larger chronicles in my childhood. Trying to beat the game with only a 1st grade reading comprehension level was hard.

Whilst Quest 64 gameplay wise, in hindsight, wasn't exactly the best -- I still loved the combat system and it was technically the first RPG-style game I ever played. At the time I did so, I enjoyed it. The worlds were a bit bare feeling sometimes, but what helped that to not matter as much was the soundtrack. My main impetus for contining to play was actually to hear what the music would sound like in other parts of the game. After being stuck at Nepty and putting the game down for about a year, and finally pushing forward, there were a few places that I stopped and just was like 'wow this music is beautiful'. This was one of them. I must have put the controller down (so I wouldn't get a random battle) and just sat back and listened to the Highland theme over a dozen times before I went back to playing. I was thinking 'I actually found a track I like better than Normoon!'. And here it is with a high quality orchestral cover. This was beautiful and I am very happy that, regardless of how Quest 64 stacks up as a game, someone enjoyed and felt inspired by the music enough to give it an amazing cover. Thank you.

Patti Rudisill Cool! I don't know if this is true or not, but it seems like that older video game music was better written for human players than the newer stuff. Maybe because they didn't have a bunch of effects and such to use?
@viopatti
@viopatti 7 жыл бұрын
+Ben Bowman I definitely agree - I find I rarely have to do more than transcribe something from SMW or early FF for example...I think the limitations of the early consoles - like only being able to use 3 or 4 voices simultaneously - make it super easy to translate for small ensemble like string quartet. Unless there are a lot of synth or rhythmic sounds! But with more contemporary OSTs, I usually can only make it work if it was already orchestrated pretty close to what I can do myself (like solo violin/piano, string quartet, etc) A lot of stuff now DOES obviously use live players but it is with full orchestra, plus a lot of samples as you said. I know I could probably do more with better sound libraries but I am limited for now. Maybe I can be more ambitious someday!

Hearing you do two of my favorite themes from this game fills me with inspiration I've been lacking for some time now. I'm actually working on an RPG Maker remake of this game with everything the original lacks, (story in particular) and I would like to have updated versions of the music as well rather than just the original n64 versions. Someone else has done a few remixes, but now I have Normoon to add to my collection. No pressure whatsoever, as I suspect it'll be a long time before I finish my remake, but in case you do decide to do more covers of this game, here are the themes I currently lack remixes of. Title Theme Melrode (beta) Melrode Monastery Melrode Monastery (beta) Holy Plains Shop Dondoran Dondoran Castle In the Vast, Deep Forest (Connor Forest) Left House in the Forest (also Glencoe Forest) Solvaring's Lair Inside the Ship Cull Hazard Larapool Blue Cave Crystal Valley Epona's Cottage Isle of Skye Nepty's Hideout Limelin Limelin (beta) Limelin Castle Baragoon Tunnel Dindom Dries Floating Monastery Mammon is Destroyed Mammon is Destroyed (beta, also called Beta Track 4) Staff Roll Beta Track 3 (that's its only name, possibly meant for cutscenes) Beta Track 5 (using it as the title screen theme when you first open the game, as well as when other members join your party) I already have updated versions of Battle, Boss Battle, Boil Hole, Brannoch Castle, Highland (was using someone else's version, but might reconsider as yours fits the game's atmosphere better), Melrode, Normoon (as of now), and Shamwood. Again, no pressure. Even just one or two of the above would be a great help. And be sure I will give you credit during the end credits.
@LordSiravant

Actually scratch that. Turns out that other guy, a dude named ADeafBat, uploaded a part 2 of orchestra remixes under my nose. I no longer need Blue Cave, Crystal Valley, Epona's Home, Isle of Skye, or Nepty's Hideout. I also found decent remixes of Baragoon Tunnel and Dondoran.

I find myself coming back to this video on the regs. It might be because I always wanted someone talented to put it to real instruments, but I think there's something else to it. I think you beautifully captured the ominous feeling of this song. When I first played quest the final zone had some very eerie feeling to it. Not just the zone before Mammon, or even the exact place where this music plays, but even the desert before all of that. Did you ever find the secret temple in the desert? I remember first stumbling on it and feeling really weirded out by it. Or did you ever discover the ruins of that village in the desert? I don't know, just seems like the rest of the game just didn't have that kinda vibe to it.

it's cool that of all the scores in all the world of video games, you chose to cover one from Quest 64. I'm currently working on a live-action web series loosely based around the 64 bit generation of video games, so I have an affinity for that era.

People bash Quest 64, but I think most of it is undeserved. Yeah, it's not the best game in the world, but it's far from the worst game ever. It needed a money and shop system, the dungeons needed a bit more polish, and the story needed more fleshing out, but those issues don't make it anywhere near as bad as Superman 64. The battle system is interesting, the music is amazing, and the character & monster designs are pretty good. as one of a handful of RPGs on the 64, it deserves more credit than it gets.

Agreed. The truth is, if this game hadn't been so rushed, it could potentially have been one of the best rpg games of its time. Princess Flora was originally slated to be a party member, as well as Leonardo and possibly even Kiliac. With more characters, more typical rpg elements such as shops and equipment, and more story, (which the GBC remake at least made an attempt at) along with the already-innovative battle system which I'm not certain has ever been repeated anywhere else, this game could have been amazing. To that end, I've been working on and off on a total remake of this game in RPG Maker, and this kind of music is exactly what I need for it. Unfortunately I have yet to find a battle script that not only replicates the unique battle system as closely as possible, but is also easy to understand and edit. But either way I am most certainly improving on the story. The GB remake helps in some areas.

@@LordSiravant I never got a notification to a reply to my comment. I just stumbled on it when revisiting the music. That said, good luck with your project.I've tried fooling around with RPG maker but never succeeded with really figuring it out.
