Bro Wiley started this whoole sound. If it wasn’t for Wiley making Eskimo, there would be no grime. Without grime, there’s no stormzy there’s no chip, ghetts, Dave. There’s also no UK drill. So he didn’t really ‘fall off’. He invented it. And as the culture has grown and now taken over the mainstream, it’s enabled artists like Dave and Stormzy to profit in ways that the pioneers could never have even imagined. Wiley’s made a few bangers that have made him coin though so I wouldn’t worry about him in that respect. His song Boasty with Sean Paul and Idris Elba went platinum.

I was a London boy myself... I've been italy for 30 years now, and I bumbed into this video on KZbin about 15 years ago. Your reaction to this top class performance by Wiley is the same as mine was, and revisit this video often for that reason. I’m commenting before finishing the video but. When Wiley was first making music it wasnt really allowed to be played on mainstream radio or promoted the same way as artists are now. He made his money and he did amazing for the time he was in. The new artists do well because people like Wiley had the courage to go first and be real and 100 with it. Back then our phones were Nokia 3210s and social media was msn messenger. Happy slaps were mad lol but remember songs like pow were banned from clubs and all my songs were tapped from my Walkman from pirate radio stations.

I think you need a grime deep dive. This was a fully homegrown UK flex with strong influences from the Drum & Bass rave scene, bashment and garage. The MCing was as much about energy and rhythm, getting you hyped and Raving than the lyrics. Although the lyrics were often heavy as well tbf. So Wiley has been MC’ing since around ‘94 and I know you’re feeling him switching up his flow but basically that is grime. Listen to any radio set and listen to the mc’s switch up their flows depending what track is mixed in next.
