Steiner is clumsy and goofy and endlessly frustrating but he and Beatrix's arcs sharply analyze identity, duty, purpose, and passion. Twitter: / hlrandrew

Steiner has always been one of my favorite characters (behind Vivi of course) and he isn't often given the credit he deserves for how hard it can be to bite back at deeply ingrained worldviews and a fractured identity - both he and Beatrix found themselves needing to grapple with the flawed idea that duty is connected to a person/place, rather than striving towards an ideal.

His flaws sets the bar of expectations so low for when he becomes from zero to hero that garnet needs, be becomes a great if not the greatest character by sticking to his core values and realizing his own faults

Steiner telling Zidane he'd follow him to "kingdom come" during the "You're Not Alone" sequence is still one of my favourite moments in any FF game

Steiner is my favorite character in the game. His stubbornness is so frustrating and comical at the beginning of the adventure, but he really grows into a great character by the end. I also really enjoyed that the writers didn't just make it a magic switch that completely changed his personality all at once, and still had him struggle with his old way of thinking at times. I like Beatrix as well, but I wish she had a little more screen time.

HE HAS RETURNED! Steiner is one of those characters I'll never forget. Truly a titan of his time. We'll never get another soldier like him.

Thanks for making this, Steiner had such an awesome character arc. I love a redemptive face-turn that pays off after moments of agony and a lot of character work.

Everyone loves Vivi, but Steiner was always my favorite, the arc he goes through is amazing...same as with the rest of the characters. IX has the best cast in the entire series (except Amarant, he sucks, and you can tell he was put into the game because Square wanted to "appeal to western audiences").

@ High g reviews: it is good to seee you h making videos man Growth is a major theme in FF9 and it is great that they explored it with prety much all characters. We get the kids growth( vivi and eiko), the teenagers( zidane and garnet) and the adults( Steiner, Beatrix and Amarant.)

For as long as there are hoards of real life people that fit right into Steiner's blind duty/patriotism/obedience trope, while never going through the same personal growth, I hope that the trope persists.
