I've ridden that track. It crushes you on every turn. It's much harder than it looks.

So awesome to see these legendary riders on this track that I had the honor and pleasure to ride in the spring of 1980 when it came to the Michigan State University campus (where Roger Young went to school). The Meingast brothers did very well and the Stetina brothers were there also. So awesome to see Greg LeMond taking to the track racing so quickly and easily. Learning to get onto that track was quite terrifying but then was easily the most fun I’ve ever had on a bicycle.

Love this, but need to point out one thing - Greg, while amazing, was not the first US World Champion of the modern era. The first WC Champ (of the modern era) was Audrey McElmury, 1969 - Brno in the former Czechoslovakia. She was an fantastic rider and a great person. Also surprised that Liggett didn't mention why the Madison is called the Madison - it was also called "the American Race" because it was first run in, you guessed it, Madison Square Garden (NYC) back in the Ancient Era.

Greg LeMond could do just about anything on a bike. I saw him win all three of his Nevada City Classic wins. The Reno Rocket.
@robbchastain30362 ай бұрын
Nice to see Greg freely admit that he was initially scared of that track and the racing. No bravado, no boasting, just, yikes, this stuff is scary. No relating to his ascension to the top of the sport, but here,, for sure, I totally relate. I recall lots of times like that with friends on bikes, racing and dueling and daring each other. And it meant a lot to face them and not back down.

If you’ve never ridden a velodrome, it’s amazingly scary. Kids take to it better than adults because they don’t realize what gravity is.

I think most of us had no idea this event existed, and Roger Young was just kid then!! (edit) Oh yeah and then Carter boycotted the 80' Olympics. Oh yeah, that's why I didn't vote in 1980.

I was in the military then . Remember that time period very well. It's a good reason not to vote !
@johns31063 ай бұрын
Are you upset only because U.S. athletes didn’t get the chance to go to Moscow and take part in Olympic Games in a country that had been aggressive invaders, or did you find the idea of the boycott to be an impotent reaction to the invasion? I’ve always been curious about people’s reasons for being so outraged over the boycott.
@G.Gorrell3 ай бұрын
@@johns3106 I thought and still think sports / Olympics should not be politized or a boycott of the Olympics should not have been used protest, because it wasn't fair to the athletes.
