@@thisismetoday while I don’t want to dampen your optimism, as much as I don’t share it, to suggest their policies are ‘people focussed’ is a mischaracterisation. They are business focussed. They offer no help to families, individuals, or the homeless/impoverished. Nothing on water companies, nothing on the NHS, short of additional private sector involvement. Nothing would make me happier than being proven wrong on all counts, but in all likelihood, all we’re going to do is continue to support war in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, while we get poorer marginally slower than we would’ve under the Tories.

What monarchy represents is the fact that the Prime Minister is answerable to an authority that stands independently of the system that elected him. It makes a statement to other countries about the kind of accountability that the British government has. It therefore strengthens diplomatic ties as people have faith in a more stable and accountable government.

The British Monarchy represents the fact that Britain only has half a parliament, because the Parliamentarians could not cast off the feudal anachronisms of the Monarchists in the English Civil War. For crying out loud, still a third of your Senate - The House of Lords - are hereditary peers. Real stability is strength, and that is still shown by the United States, which defeated these aristocratic parasites almost 250 years ago. The real stability of strength that the United States built, largely because they freed themselves of the burdens and drain of redundant monarchist aristocracy, is why Britain needed the USA to save its backside in two world wars. The fact there are still large amounts of British people who welcome the cancer of monarchy, only shows how weak you are as compared to your American cousins, for all their faults.

@benjones3466 it means SO much. The king is still theoretically the ruler. And the Commons are the people's representative. How is not letting the ruler not enter the House of Commons not a significant thing? Sure, the meaning is lost to you, but should they care? Besides, there are traditions and rituals like these even in republics but don't get as much media attention as the King's Speech. You might have opinions and thr right to say them, but that doesn't mean you're right.

Er... yes, that's exactly what I'm doing and in no way am I indicating that I'm objectively correct. Clearly me saying my opinion has upset you. But I'll carry on to say, in my opinion, that the performative act of holding the doors until the king's representative acts cross is hardly significant to most people anymore. No one living today, or for a couple generations at least, has lived in a time when there was any question over the separation of powers between Parliament and the monarchy. That theoretical power the monarchy still holds is so theoretical as to be nonexistent. There's no feasible way the monarchy could exert any of the powers it technically still has against the will of the government without triggering a political crisis that would swiftly lead to the removal of those powers. I'm by no means against all traditions that commemorate our history. There are just some that I think no longer have any meaning and would not be missed if they were forgotten.

If Reform is still around, the right-wing votes will be split between them and Tories. So long as they don’t completely cock things up and reform is just as (but not more) popular, I could see them winning the next election
