Ive said for quite a while now, this slow build up from the back is causing us problems because we allow teams to organise in front of us and its makes it so much harder breaking teams down, there has to be another optio introduced into our play--in saying that when we did move the ball we had forest all over the shop, could/should have been 4/5 goals, Forest keeper was outstanding

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN : As a football analyst, I noticed that the games Liverpool struggle to win most times are against teams that play counter attacking football with few players going forward and instruct half the squad to stay back and these teams do it real good. Newcastle, Girona, Forest and Amorim's Man U. Now, this is not the first time Liverpool play teams like these but Liverpool's counter attacking with younger Mane, Firmino and a younger and faster Salah was so rapid, even having half your squad staying behind didn't help but most importantly it was Firmino. But Liverpool don't have that anymore. FIRMINO - Firmino for Liverpool was so versatile. When Liverpool needed to counter, he had the ability to perform half turns and give perfectly weighted passes that put both Mane and Salah in great scoring positions. You would hardly intercept Firmino's pass. BUT not only that, sometimes you can't always counter. When the opponents park the bus, Firmino was instrumental in adding technique to the squad inorder to unlock defences. He utilised close control, give and gos, half turns, skillful passes and he had balance. Add Coutinho, Keita, Matip, Fabinho, Gini beside him and you have a group of technical players that can unlock defences. 2025 LIVERPOOL ARNE SLOT is doing an amazing job. When I look at the current Liverpool squad, the most technical player has to be either Elliot or Gravenberch, notable mention is Jones. They're amazing players but not at Firmino's level in technique BUT as an aspiring coach I think there are still ways to utilise them. HOW TO UTILISE LIVERPOOL'S TECHNIQUE. Against a team like Forest, play 4-3-3, keep the front 3 of Gakpo - Diaz - Salah. In midfield, Two 10s - Elliot and Gravenberch and one 8 - Macca(We would have no problem playing out the back with Macca as the opponents usually would not press high). Keep the back 4. INSTRUCTIONS - Diaz False 9, False Fullbacks to overload the midfield, Gakpo and Salah hug the sidelines up high to spread out opponent(If opponents remain compact instruct both Gakpo and Salah to ALWAYS take on their man quickly, no back passes it'll be 1v1 situation and potential chance). If opponents spread wide, Gravenberch and Elliot in pockets of spaces in front of opponents back line. Diaz should roam, seek the ball and usually begin the attacks. One single pass from Diaz through the opponents midfield line to either Gravenberch or Elliot (half turn required) is a chance created. I've seen what Elliot and Gravenberch can do to protect/keep the ball and give them time to either lay through passes to the wingers cutting in by now, or shield the ball to retain possession right in front of the opponent's defensive line, this gives Liv even more options to lay it on to Diaz who's running in by now or introduce a give and go. DEFENSIVE - Both TAA and Robertson must be able to carry and protect the ball inverted. They'll always have to drive into the midfield with the ball. I know for a fact Robertson used to do this but TAA not sure but he can always use passes to get out into the midfield and stay there. Defensively this opens up Liverpool's flanks for counter attacks, BUT immediately Liverpool lose possession it's easy to press the ball because our midfield is already overloaded, false 9, CMS and both fullbacks will press the ball high and the opponent will be forced to play bad quality passes or trapped in offside trap. I believe even the opportunities Liverpool were creating in this game were half assed chances. There's no way Liverpool play using my tactics against Forest and have zero shots on target in first half.
