I was there in September. It was jam packed. It was nice to escape into the terrace houses, where the crowd wasn't so bad.

The best time of year would be March/April. Weather will be pleasant enough to have a day out and it will be much emptier. And as a bonus cheaper flights/hotels.

A most impressive place. I was there about 5 years ago. I loved your term "maelstrom of tourists". I could not have come up with a more apt description! I remember the "first ad" for a business carved in stone. An ad for a brothel I believe. Or at least, that is my memory. It was very interesting to walk the streets where Cleopatra and Marc Anthony may have walked. It would have been a lot of fun to visit it with someone with your expertise.

When i went, i could not decide between Ephesus or Pergamon...So i did both. Ephesus is beautiful, but the landscape of Pergamon took my breath away. Both recommended. 😊🙏

I am literally the same age as Ben and had the exact same experience as him. FF8 was my first FF and I received it for my birthday in 2000, right before my birthday. So I was 11 turning 12. I had also only played non-rpgs beforehand. My mom bought me the game and I played it ALL night with my buddies. It blew my mind, from the opening cutscene to the experience getting you stronger, to literally everything. I also felt like crying when it was over and it touched me like no other game has since. The GFs, music, ambiguous ending, minigames, characters…it is a truly special game that has impacted my life tremendously.

Lysimachos was certainly a general of Alexander the Great, but he was unlikely to have been so at the *beginning* of the 4thC BC, as neither he nor Alexander were born yet. Did you early 3rdC BC? (I'm guessing it has to be between Ipsus and his death to Seleukos?)

Death of Arsinoe...sister of Cleopatra.....mentioned at 5:30 in the video. She was ordered to be killed by Mark Anthony in 41 BC, Cleopatra's lover. The elimination of possible political rivals. She was 22 years old.

Good luck, Googling "inscriptions in Ephesus" brings up this little tid bit of information, "approximately 7000 stone inscriptions and 1500 graffiti and dipinti have been found in Ephesus to date", so again, good luck.

I am interested in your pronunciation of "agora." You pronounce the final "a" with the "a" of "father" while the dictionaries I consulted on line (American Heritage, Websters, Oxford) and the linked sound files reduce it to a schwa (the "a" of "about"). Does your pronunciation reflect the underlying Greek root?

I am afraid I don't know about the Greek pronunciation, but agora is an Italian word too, and I have always heard it pronounced like in this video (apart the pronunciation of the r consonant, which is perfectly understandable but impossible to pronounce correctly for all non-native speakers, being the hardest r in European languages). In Italian the accent is on the last a (thus in dictionaries , and in Italian Wikipedia, it is written as agorà).

Our Lord Christ visited Ephesus.

No he didn't. There is nothing in the gospels even vaguely hinting that he ever left Palestine, except for the dodgy hint about going to Egypt as an infant, although that may have been added centuries after the original texts. But lots of countries have traditions about Jesus visiting after his resurrection. One religion based on that survives, the British Israelites believe that he somehow visited the province of Britannia, so they literally believe that "God is an Englishman".
