I'm running into this question because I'm designing a Baritone. seems to me that nut end is most important because that's where you want the bow, and then you want the balance of it straight. I'm thinking of adding carbon rods to the whole neck to keep the high frets level.

II'm no expert but it looks to me like the difference in effective length between having the nut on the headstock end and having it on the heel end is only about 3/4", and couldn't you just make that up with a longer truss rod? I'm planning out a neck-through guitar and I'd really like to put the adjustment nut inside the neck pickup cavity...

I was given a partially built guitar a few years ago. It is a Les Paul style guitar that a builder had started. For some reason, not sure why, this person decided against a truss rod before attaching the fingerboard. Instead, he placed 2 carbon fiber rods in the neck to straighten the neck. Is this a situation that if the neck begins to bend, it could be retrofit with a truss rod?

You could, but let me explain what you would have to do before you attempt this. First of all, you would have to remove the fretboard. It will likely be destroyed in the process, depending on how well it was glued. Then you would have to route slot for the truss rod down the middle of the neck.this would require some kind of fixture and a router template. No such fixture exists to my knowledge. Has the neck been glued into the body yet? If so, it will probably be at an angle which may pose a new set of challenges. Honestly, I think the neck will be fine without the truss rod.

@Highline Guitars The neck and everything had already been glued when I received it. Thank you so much for the information. I thought it should be alright without a truss rod, but figured I would ask someone with more knowledge and experience. Keep up the wonderful videos, I am learning so much. Take care

Why is the truss shorter than the neck? Gotta be a reason I'm sure...

The heel of the neck is supported by the body-to-neck joint. A truss rod won't change the geometry in that area.
