This song struck a chord nationally here. She wrote because her and her brother lost both of their parents during their teenage years. The music itself is kept very simple (on purpose here) but her lyrics are magical, are filled with these small details with words that sound similar but mean something different. At this point in time she wasn't a pro at all but was just dabbling in songwriting. This was a talent show that focused entirely on artists who write their own material. It actually launched several artists' careers including Maaike's. Since then she has already released two full albums and is now working on album nr. 3. You said you couldn't believe why she could sing that with such a straight face and actually that is one of remarks one of the judges on the couch actually makes, that the power of the song and its delivery is not that you see the emotion in her but that the emotion lands with the one listening / watching.

Note to every non-dutch speaker. the lyrics are perfectly translated, you may not get the rhyme, but the meaning is translated very well...
@baskoning98963 жыл бұрын
Very well, I would agree with. But I would not call it 'perfect', I could spot a few details wrong, or 'could be better'. It is nearly impossible to accurately translate the Dutch subtleties I think, this translation did a very good job at trying.
@AnnekeOosterink3 жыл бұрын
@@baskoning9896 Yeah, the little changes she made to words, "ontbangt me" etc, that's almost impossible to translate, as the word in Dutch doesn't exist, though we an easily understand what she means to say. The subtitles do a very good job in trying to capture both the meaning of the text as well as the coined words she uses. It's very hard to do that well. For English speakers, think of trying to translate the jabberwocky from CS Lewis into another language, keep his nonsense words and keep the meaning you can get out of it as well. It's so difficult!
@ClySaga3 жыл бұрын
I mean the grammatical order was also kinda messed up. Dutch has a different order of words from English and keeping the Dutch word arrangement while translating to English can make it difficult to understand still ...

Thank you for responding to such a touching and meaningful song. How each of us will choose to live with past pain is based on how we think about it; some people will feel nostalgia, some people will feel pain and torment, some people will be shocked to not accept the reality that has happened, some people will try to cover up or forget, ... But the strong thing The most important thing is to accept and smile, continue to live optimistically; so that later when looking back, only to be happy and make life better. Because even if they are no longer with you, the love for each other is still forever, and those who are still with you and love you will cultivate more for that love.

@sloth2109833 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would be feasible without changing the song. The subtitled english lyrics kinda seem like poor english at times because they stick very literally word for word to the dutch and obviously the languages are a bit different gramatically and ideomatically. In subtitles this is fine because it conveys the meaning but it wouldnt work as the english lyrics if you are singing it. I'm not saying its necessarily completely impossible to make some english approximation but the cadence and flow of the song is so hooked onto the words rather than the melody that it would be hard to make this song in a different language without changing it. I think it would lose a lot in the process.

This song played on the funeral of my ex best friend's dad. I got to know him when I was 4, saw him almost every day of the week for 5 years, until the friendship I had with his daughter ended. He used to be like a second father figure for me, I was used to see him and he was always nice to me. Fast forward to 2 years after the friendship ended they had moved to a town half an hour away. I was taking a bath when I heard my mum talk to her ex best friend (who is the mother of my ex best friend) on the phone, I asked her what happened and she quite bluntly said that the man was working on top of a house, forgot something there and went to grab it, slipping in the process and dying instantly. I had cried for an hour, but I texted my ex best friend, saying I'll always be there for you, even though our friendship is over. She asked me to come by that evening, so I did. We had sobbed for hours in each others arms. I went to his funeral, heard this song. My ex best friend ended up only using me for filling the void in her heart she had for the first week to never talk to me again.
